Just had an email from the elder of my two little bros. He's been unhappy in his job for a bit. He's just emailed to say his boss wants him to accept 30% less salary  and am I in later to talk to him. Told him to phone asap.

Is this a sign of things to come? Though, it may just be a case of never mix business with pleasure. ElilBro and the boss have been friends for years and ElilBro finally accepted the job offer from him almost (but not quite!) a year ago.... ElilBro is worried that, because he's 3 weeks off the year there (which then gives proper employment rights etc) if he says no, he's out the door tomorrow....

    Ahh me...

soappie, sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs (and sorry for boring anyone) but this is my specialist area. Firstly, how much notice is in his written statement of terms and conditions? It isn't safe to dimiss someone over ten months with a months notice, or eleven months with a week. Strong argument for if they had followed a reasonable process, etc then he would have had his year.
Secondly, they cant change his t & c's without his agreement, but they can restructure his role for economical reasons and potentially fairly dismiss him if he doesn't agree (as long as they follow stat procedures). Could he ask for a 20% pay cut and work 4 days a week? He should go to the meeting armed with info about how he makes the company money. Can he take the cut in the short term whilst looking for another job? Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you need any more info. I agree with what you say about a sign of things to come, been some interesting case law round this lately as well.

Not much happened here today, been to work, took ds2 for his booster jabs much to his intense unhappiness. Helped the boys to tidy the play room. DW on, WM on, and that ever classy meal of toast for tea as DH has gone to bed early with a headache.

Waste the evening on the internet, sort the business accounts or do some filing, hmm, decisions, decisions.

Hex, thanks :T - that's VERY useful. I need to be taught how to suck eggs in this field. In fact, I need to be shown where the eggs are and then what sucking means. I've worked as a freelance for years so know v. little about permanent employment law. I'll wait for him to call...

Just found our gas bill for jan to april and it is a smidge under £400! The AGA is gas which hikes the bill up. Last year for the same period though is was £464. I have lit the fire with free wood more this winter and last year OH was at home all day and kept putting the heating on - I put a jumper and socks on. Summer bill was £95 which would be AGA and hot water.

EDIT: actually the usage is almost identical 550 units verus 563 the cost of the unit is cheaper this winter

EDIT: just noticed the price has now gone up again from 1st April - job for next week visit comparisons sites!

If DD squeaks her bed one more time I'm going to make her sleep on the floor  She went up to bed at 5.30 complaining of being tired, lights off at 6pm after giving her a chance to read, and I've been up and down to her like a yo-yo ever since including while she had a 5 minute phonecall to ex about something she's worried about that only he could answer. I've told her I've got to study tonight as I haven't done ANY uni work (only been working on it since she went to bed) and I'm suppose to go to my first tutorial this Saturday morning. I know I work well/better under pressure but DD might end up pushing it a bit too far and loose some weekend benefits (like staying up until 9pm) if she doesn't let me get on. Only here now as I needed to do something else for 5 minutes as the text was starting to blur in my book....guess I better book an eye test at somepoint

Well, just been in the phone to ElilBro. He's philosophical about it and won't be financially in the mire.

Seems he's been doing a slightly different job for the last three months than the one he was originally hired to do. Boss has decided he's paying him too much for the different job. There are probably two options that the boss will present him - either offer a contract for him to continue doing the job he's doing at the reduced rate or offer a short term contract (probably for three months) at the same rate.

Either way ElilBro has decided he wants out and is honing his CV. I've given him big sisterly advice and lent an ear and a shoulder. So, not as big a crisis as I thought but still not nice for him.

Hex, I mentioned about the dodginess of one month's notice in the eleventh month but Elilbro's wife is a solicitor, and although she deals with family things, like wills and trusts, she's spoken to one of the partners who says what is happening is actually legal... so there'll be no tribunal route.
