Can anyone help me please? I have been using 1899 for some time. However, lately, there have been 0845 numbers and others on my BT bill. The 0845 numbers on my last bill are internet dial ups, one of them, a prepaid card, and way more than I am sure I dialled so I should not be paying for the calls. I rang BT and they said i shhould take it up with 1899. Has anyone else had these problems?

Perhaps the calls were made via BT instead of 1899 because you haven't programmed your computer to dial via 1899? In which case, as Heinz has pointed out, it's just as well you didn't!

Thanks for the advise so far. no reply from 1899 so for now I will use 18185 and BT for 0845 numbers. The thing is, that other calls where I have pre-dialed 1899, have gone through to BT and so they have charged me and of course, there is the 0845 number which is a pre-paid internet dial-up (mipcards) which means I am paying twice. The number of calls seems way above what i have used too. I am now afraid to use my computer at home in case there is one of those scams dialling thorugh when I am online. How would I do that Victor?

As you have a 18185 account, why not do your dial-up internet via GeoISP by dialling:

1818502081149845 - 5p for as long as you like!

Thanks Heinz. I have heard from mipcards, and they said that it is an 0808 number they gave me so is free. I will keep checking up on my calls online with BT. There is a scam though where calls are made when you are online with a dial-up?

Yes, the rogue dialler problem has not gone away completely and people still get caught by their dial up connections being re-routed to 09 premium rate numbers.

If you suspect that sort of thing, a cheap device can prevent it. It's called a Phone Guard.

If you have broadband just disable your modem in system.

START/Control Panel/System/Harware/Device manager/ scroll down to modems click the + sign, right click your modem and select disable.

I seem to have solved the problem. I only use 18185, and make sure that on dialling up for the internet, it is the 0808 number. I have checked my online BT account and no calls are going through. I might have been dialling an 0845 myself on the dial up. I do not know why 1899 has not been working, and I have no come back on the bills I have had. But it seems to be sorted so thanks guys.

I don't think 1899, 18185 or 18866 pass freephone calls - there'd be no point them doing so.
