Don't get rid of them, Kaat Lady. Convert them into self-watering containers.

All my stuff is in home-made SWCs. Partly it's easier to take care of things (which would be more relevant, I grant you, if summer were to break out at any time), partly the plants prefer a constant environment, rather than the wet/dry cycle you get with the usual watering methods, and partly you don't wash out any nutrients. You can top up with water or feed as appropriate, and the only places it can go is in the compost or in the plants! No waste & better for the plants.

Trust me, if I had bigger than a balcony, I'd be taking them off your hands tout de suite, my dear.

I'll post fuller details at the weekend (sorry, I've got a lot on today & tomorrow), but basically, you put a false bottom to create the reservoir, drill a small hole in the container the same depth as the underside of the false bottom to make an overflow (so you can't over-fill it & waterlog the compost; also an easy way to know when it's topped up!), cover the false bottom with capillary matting, tucked down into the reservoir, insert a filler tube, fill up with compost, and away you go.
I'll post the full story of how I've done mine on a shoestring at the weekend (mine work out at £2 each, but you won't have to buy the crates, and you might have other things about the shed that would replace bits I've had to buy.) Think Blue Peter!

I am so excited about our garden harvest! :jToday we pulled up our shallots and potatoes and planted out our winter veg. This is the first year that we have had a garden big enough to grow food in and we are loving it! Next year we are hoping to grow all our own fruit and veg. So far we have enjoyed:
• Peas
• Courgettes
• Strawberries
• Gooseberries
• Potatoes
• Shallots
• Herbs
• Lettuces (different types)
• Radishes
• Fig (yip just one!)
We still have loads of different things growing in the greenhouse and the garden. I just wanted to know what everyone else had been enjoying from their garden?
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com
• Ok, I haven't any pics yet but this year I planted 7 tomato plants - two regular ones that need staking and 5 of a new variety called 'hundreds and thousand' that grows well in hanging baskets as it tumbles down. (Well, that is what the catalogue said so I have planted each one into a 14inch hanging basket!) Then I have 6 strawberry plants - down to just five 'cos one shrivelled and died on me!! I also have six dwarf chilli pepper plants and 6 normal pepper plants all growing in pots. Oh plus a goja berry bush that is growing like a weed.

I also bought a small fig tree but that and the goja won't crop til next year or the year after. Apart from that I grow salad greens and radishes in big pots on the patio and I have 15 different herbs also in pots, mixed in amongst the flowers. Plus chives of course and garlic chives which were hard to get going from seed - I sowed about 25 seeds and only got 4 that grew!!

We were supposed to do potatoes this year but whilst chitting they all went wrinkly and dead looking so we gave up. Was our first attempt so no idea what we did wrong!

The garden looks very verdant and lush and I can't wait to share some pictures with you if I ever work out how to do it!!
To be frugal, you need to spend money wisely, simply spending less is not enough.
