You might be able to get some flowering sideshoots which will crop later? If not I guess it's down to the garden centre to get some more,

Wilkinsons in Droitwich had some toms earlier 2 for £8, they were a good 40cm to 50cm tall, and already had fruit on them.

As for me, I split my little Gems today, 1 to a pot. I also potted some dwarf french beans and set about my smaller raised bed. Its looking very healthy.
I will let you know how the beans get on.

Nearly lost my yellow pepper, it wasn't due for a feed till today and was wilting a little. A quick splash with the watering can and it picked up lovely....

Didn't lose any plants during last nights storm but the gazebo almost took off a couple of times, had to put some of the poles back in at midnight and it was chuckin it down.
    Hope everyones plants are ok...:T

I have found that my courgette has had alot of its leaves snapped off. My Oh said my toms had fallen over but they seem ok. Hope my courgette minus it's leaves will be ok as it has been blossoming nicely and I ate my first one off it this week and it is my only one

If you have a greenhouse and some courgette seeds you might be able to still get another courgette plant or few if you want to. One of mine has only just germinated and is rather small at the moment. I'm using the conservatory as a greenhouse as it’s mostly glass hehe. The plants are doing absolutely fine. My pumpkin plant has just germinated as well and that is also really small but doing very well also. I put a towel under the pots and water the towel so the seeds get their water from below where their roots will grow. It promotes root growth as well as a healthy plant that grows well :D .

Dim question number .......(dunno, I've lost count!)

Do sweet potatoes grow like "ordinary" potatoes, and is anyone here growing any?

I've just prepared some for dinner - Asda's £1 a bag - and the end of one of them looks like it's sprouting. If I pop this in a pot with some compost, and keep earthing up, etc etc will I get a harvest of sweet potatoes for (nearly) free? Or is it more complicated than that? I've put the sprouty end in a dark place while I await wise counsel, in case it needs to be more developed or something before being buried.

Looking forward to furthering my veggie education with your help.

You have to have the right growing conditions for yams and sweet potatoes. They can be DEADLY toxic if not treated right:A I'd buy them from a supermarket if I were you, and always store them in a dark, cool place.

Never grown them, but they aren't grown in the same way. Sweet potatoes are grown from things called slips which you can buy from seed companies etc

I think if you plant the whole tuber it will rot, thats what I remember reading.

JTB2412- are your raspberries in the garden, or a container?
I'd love to get a raspberry bush or two for my balcony a-pot-ment, but I've been told raspberries are not suitable for containers.

Do you - or anyone else on here - know different?

autumn raspberries are apparently suitable for container growing as the fruit grows from old wood but summer raspberries are not suitable for container growing as the fruit grows on new wood...

I have one autumn rasberry in a large pot this year...

try and borrow Container Gardening by Michael Guerra or "the WHICH? guide to grow your own vegetables" from your local library (I am pretty sure both are out of print now) - these are my bibles and I know it is mentioned in one of them.

    Hi there hathor

Im growing sweet potatoes -from slips grown from supermarket sweet potatoes.. my 1st time..but so far so good :D ..i read about it in gardeners world mag and there were no warnings -so im giving them a bash as i love em and they are expensive
They do like a lot of warmth..they reckon 150 days..so mine are being grown in crates in a big tent ... they can be grown in the ground but they are very invasive ..so a devil to get out once they get hold...
Apparently you plant the slips..keep them watered and in about 150 days there should be at least 2 or 3 sweet potatoes attatched to the stem underground...so i should be looking at getting at least 80 -fingers crossed :T
if you need any info on how to get the slips growing just let me know and i will tell you what i did... rather than waffle on here if no-one needs to know;)

I heard that lots of cattle have died this year from eating badly grown sweet poatoes that had been added to their feed:eek:
