We're just a little bit behind you mjr, our courgettes are flowering, salad has sprouted but not quite big enough but we do have plenty of flowers on the toms - won't be long now before we can start eating
Oh and some of our spuds are just starting to flower so hopefully we'll have some lovely new pots very soon!
I need some advice. My courgette plants are not growing at all and lots of my seedlings have been eaten by something(can't catch the culprits, so not sure what/who is eating them:( I had a bumper crop last year, so well disappointed this year
I always rotate my crops, so that's not the problem. I did put down manure this year for the first time ever (I usually just use growmore) do you think there could be something in the manure that's causing the problem?
thanks in advance:D0 -
Lovely to see everyones pictures. This is my second year of veg growing and the veg area of the garden looks like this:
The crop includes lots of potatoes, runner beans, peas, a few leeks, pumpkin and some kohl rabi. The fruit section at the top has strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. I have toms, a courgette, a mini cucumber and some aubergines in the greenhouse. I need to put some sweetcorn in, and get some raddishes in. Have some speedy beans to plant as well.
Still a little sparse as we have only just put up a fence to deter these pests:
and have yet to come up with a way to keep this one off my seedlings:'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -
Lovely well ordered plot Hex. Envy you your chickens!
Sally06 - Did you use the bagged composted manure or the "real stuff"?
I used a lot of the bagged stuff last autumn/this spring, all over my vegetable patch and notice that some crops are not doing too well. I suspect this may be because the bagged product is a little acid and some vegetables don't like it too much. I don't know whether this could be the cause of your problems with your courgettes. I will go easy with this stuff next year and try to use the real product if I can find some well rotted manure, to see whether this makes any difference.0 -
Primrose - we got cow manure from the local farm - £25 delivered for a 5 tonne trailer, a lot more than we had in mind tbh, and not that well rotted. Gave a lot away but the last ton or so is under the blue tarp in the first picture rotting down for autumn. I bought a lot bagged last year but had a lot of weeds from some batches which put me off - plus of course the cost.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0

Im in love with your plotits got to be the little picket fence... made me think of MR Mcgregors garden in peter rabbit
Sally... it could be keel slugs... the little blighters live underground  ... are you growing in tubs or in the ground? if its tubs try and pull the size of the tub away from the compost and you may even see ordinary slugs hiding just below the surface:rolleyes:-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -

Lovely well done.
My cat use to climb into the green house via the roof window, only trouble was he couldn't get back out again, ! the first time he did it, I came back to a very dehydrated cat, after that a cat flap was put in the door for him!!:rotfl:Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

MRSMCAWBER, I'm growing in the ground. How do I get rid of keel slugs? I have put pellets down, but that doesn't seem to help

thanks for the advice! I'm loving all your photos.
Well done everyone:T0 -
Hi sally
I was growing everything in tubs apart from the butternut squash and courgettes - I put a big piece of membrane down and planted them through that.. but earlier this week i took the risk of lifting them out of the ground and into tubs (even though 1 was in flower)...The slugs were having a field day and if they had been left i was going to lose them anyway -thank heavens they seem much happier in the tubs and still flowering....
I try not to use anything (well apart from removing the critters and sticking them on the bird table :rotfl: ..but i did find this ...

don't know if it will be any help
Whilst im on here.. i have been out feeding the tomatoes this morning and have spotted 3 flowers on one of the cucumbers :j ...
I have the 1st tomatoes on too and later im hoping to pick the first beans/peas (well not counting the peas i have eaten outside -to test of course).... I don't have enough of 1 kind but enough odds n sods to do a stirfry -with chard, curly kale and pac choi and water cress from the tubs too... won't be huge but i figure i need to take them off to encourage more flowers

sally - our courgettes are still tiny really, probably only 8 - 10 inches tall. They seem to have gone into suspended animation with the cool weather!
I don't seem to be too affected by slugs eating things, but I do have slug traps down and tiles which I check each day. There's normally a fair few in them that I get rid of.All I seem to hear is blah blah blah!0 -
