Embarrassed to demonstrate my ignorance, but I need to know, so here goes: I want some more coarse vermiculite for my container mix (following SFG advice here) and have been buying a bag for £6.69. (Sorry, it doesn't say on the bag what quantity it holds.)
Is the "SILVAPERL INSULATION VERMICULITE GRANULES V4 100LTR £7.92 EA "
from Travis Perkins the same stuff, or a specially-for-insulation/not suitable for gardening type of vermiculite?
Obviously, if it's the same stuff, or would be equally suitable for my purposes, the 100ltr buy from TP looks like better value.
Would a kind person please put me straight?
Thanks in advance.0 -
Hi Tomsolomon ........ greenhouse looks great ! Glad you managed to find another one after the first little 'adventure' ! Now the fun begins ! Just a word of warning though ........ don't do like we did and go mad planting everything in sight ........ now got loads of seedlings/young plants and no where to put them (hubby has to now dig yet another raised bed - lucky for us we've got a big garden !)
I will get round to posting some pics soon (might do it this evening if I get finished in the garden).
Really lovely to see everyone's gardens and great to share tips/hints - have learnt a lot from this thread !:jWeight loss to date 1st 11.5lb :j0 -

Hi peeps we got some toms today a couple of varieties, some red and yellow peppers, I got some chile seeds off my dad, hoping its not to late to propagate them in the green house.
The Iris's are doing realy well this year, we put some big rocks around the edge of the pond to stop the toddler untill I can get a small fence around it. but we are going to rip out the old pond and put a bigger preformed liner in later in the year.
Thanks all, its nice to get some positive feedback, I'm having a BBQ this weekend your all invited.....:DTo travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
I think it's too late for chillis, tomatoes and peppers from seed now ( I might be wrong)0

Hi All,
After spending aaages on here drooling over various folks piccies and thinking how much bigger everyone's plants look than mine  I was hoping I could join in. I've been away for a while so feel like a newbie again, but am so excited about my garden (2nd time of growing veg for me so still very novice) I was hoping no one would mind if I shared some piccies (hope they work!)
My Main plot with Onions, spring onions, leek, potatos and carrots.
My tomato plants. The bowl in front did contain marigold seedlings but the birds seem to find them yummy
My pots - cucumbers, peppers, strawberrys, mint, some herby things and supposedly a cherry tree, but it looks more like a dead branch atm.
More cucumber and pepper with some lettuce up top.
A hot chilli pepper plant, a butternut squash and some Mange Tout Mange Tout!

Can anyone advise about raspberry canes?
I was hoping to have raspberries and blueberries in containers on my balcony for next year, and have tracked down the blueberries, but someone told me raspberries are not suitable for containers as the roots need lots of room.
Would you experienced growers agree, or is there some special variety I could look for that might give me raspberries-in-a-pot?
I wonder if I'll have to net the fruit to keep the seagulls off? Probably!! :mad:0 -
brassic, did you plant marigold near the toms for a reason? i heard greenfly dont like marigold etc so i put ones near my toms and peppers but the greenfly got to one of my pepper plants (luckily i spotted it on my daily inspection).totally a tog!:D0

Hello all,
I am growing vegetables for the first time ever in pots and trays in a minature greenhouse we got from Robert Dyas. I have some questions which probably sound silly, but I would be grateful for any help.
We are growing radishes - some of the shoots are the size of the cress, whilst the rest have leaves about the size of a £2 coin. Should we remove the cress size shoots to give the bigger ones more space?
Amongst other things we have also planted carrots and onions in pots, yet I'm not sure when they need thinning, and how many shoots you remove when doing so?
Also we are growing lettuce which are about the same size as dandelion leaves - are these fully grown yet?
I have lots more questions, but I'll just ask these for now, ok one more, we are growing two courgette plants in a deep pot - this sounds really dumb, but does the courgette grow under ground, or from the stem?
Thank you in advance for any help - it is much appreciated, I get so excited growing vegetables - I want to get some crop!Watch this space...0 -
Think I may have been too slow on the veggies this year. All of my plants are still sprouts
(except a rather keen squash). Any chance I could get a cucumber from sprout to crop in 10 weeks?
Cheers
