Hi Primrose
It my first bash at watercress too... mine is treated the same as salad leaves -you just sprinkle the seeds on compost and cover...if you are doing it in a pot they say you just need to make sure the saucer is always full of water.
I have been picking it of and it replaces its self but like spinach it does bolt/go to seed easily..so i am going to set some more every couple of weeks..
hope that helps...-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -

Mrsmacawber the watercress I have seen must be 12 inches high how can you get it to grow in a saucer of water. As I have been trying to grow watercress for
quite some time now and cant get it to root at all .
sorry I have read it wrong you have it in a pot

It has been ages since I have been to this forum, or MSE for that matter. Unfortunately I started my veg garden off a little late this year on account of the fact that I was in the early stages of pregnancy when I wanted to be sowing and planting and was not feeling particulary grand as you can imagine! Now that I am nearing the half way point, I am struggling to do to general maintenacne of the garden, but my boys enjoy helping (7 & 4 very son) and I have even got hubby pitching in and he's enjoying it!
Sorry for the sheer number of pics, normally I would have shared throughout the thread, but now have a fair few pics as my stuff is a little spread out.
Potatoes:
One of the pumpkins (my boys have 1 each)
Some of the herbs and the Italian baby plum tom plant we picked up at the weekend:
Garlic:0 -
Strawberries:
Baby strawberry plants from last years runners (I am sure there will be some going spare this year!)
Potatoes we put in over the weekend and my poor wind beaten toms and pepper plants:
We have some raised beds this year. In the first bed we have the first sowing of peas at the back, broccoli in the middle and second sowing of peas closest to me. In the second bed at the back, 2 courgette plants, on the left, radish and a tiny row of spring onions next to them:0 -

:rotfl: sorry ... i should learn to explain properly...
It is watercress im growing, in a tub outside -the tubs stand in a saucer/tray like tomatoes do ..and that is kept full of water
My watercress is doing fine.. but it is threatening to go to seed but its 80 here at the moment -indoors in the shade -6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
In the deep bed, 2 kinds of carrots and 2 sowings of leeks:
Salad bed: at the back, sweetcorn, then beetroot seedlings. In front of the seedlings are 2 cucumber plants, one looking very nibbled on, on either side is rocket and in the middle should be lettuce.
One of the reasons we have all the mesh over the frames on the beds!:0 -
Looking fab madhouse!! I may have to copy your little mesh thingys next year, we have two cats who just luuurve to dig in my raised beds - little devils!!0

everything is looking so fab, well done everyone:beer: i just love this thread, i'm learning loads, my stuff is still in the very early stages (due to being so far north its more colder here!) i have been out on slug alert and have to say i've hardly seen any
aparantly its cos my neighbours has loads of frogs in his pond, they like to eat slugs, (so i'm told) so for a slug infested garden i would recommend getting frogspawn:D
totally a tog!:D0 -
Mrs Mc
I am getting so envious - and heading out buying suitable straight-sided containers for planting-up myself (having figured one gets more "bang for ones buck" in straight-sided containers than round ones).0 -
ceridwen, you can make those 'straight sided' containers yourself with any odd bits of wood or plastic you can lay your hands on rather than buying any. then you can make them exactly the size you need ( well they do say size matters:rotfl: ) , & it won't cost very much.
Terri :beer:When I married 'Mr Right', nobody told me his first name was 'Always'. ::rotfl:0
