Thanks for bumping this Kaz
I've been thinking of getting one of these - saw them in the sales. Not going to get one this month but possibly soon.
Does anyone have the version where the plates come off and can go in the dishwasher? Does it work? Is it more expensive?
I don't want to end up with another gadget sitting in the back place getting dusty. (I'm afraid I'm not a big SC user - need to try again I think)"You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me." - C.S. Lewis0 -
Thanks for finding this thread Kaz.........I knew it was here but searched and searched for it the other day and couldn't find it.
I've had mine for a couple of years but I mainly use it for toasted sandwiches. Thanks to your post the other day I got it out and dusted it down to try a few other things. I think it got relegated to the back of the cupboard because it was such a pain to clean, but this week when it's still hottish I've been wiping it down with kitchen towel and that's made cleaning it much easier.
Anyway, I've been using it to grill bacon in the mornings and last night I did some veg on it........courgettes, red onion, peppers and tomatoes. I put the chunky cut courgette, onion and peppers on the grill then mixed some garlic, mixed herbs and olive oil together and drizzled it over the veg then threw on the tomatoes for a few minutes. They were lovely and tasted just as good as oven roasted veg which take three times as long to cook.

I've got the one with removable plates peem - they do pop in the DW, but TBH when I pulled them out it looked like they had powder on them - so I wiped them.... BIG MISTAKE! Covered in thick black dust, yuck!
I'm going to use the tip in this thread from now on and just put a damp cloth in it at the end (probably use the floor cloth type as it's nice and thick)
I did cook chicken thighs in it, and the frozen med veg I had - I think that fresh would work better.
Also tried the potato wedges - my advice would be to use slices (scallops?) instead of wedges - and try to keep same thickness.
My next recipie will be to cook long, slices of Aubergine with a cheese (eg brie/feta) in the middle, and serve with ratatouille.
As to whether I'd buy one - if there was just me or me + 1 then I would, but for my hungry tribe, even with this beast, cooking anything other than cuts of meat will need to be done in batches & so take ages.
Personally I think a good griddle pan is a much wiser investment!!!

We have an old one and I wondered about the removable plates too.
I don't use it much as it's such a pain to clean - especially as the nonstick is now coming off - tried toasted sandwiches last night and it was a disaster - the bread stuck on the bottom went all soggy and wouldn't come off!!! Is that coz I buttered the bread like you do for a sandwich maker - or because of the non stick stuff wearing off??working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Hi newlywed,
I think it's probably because of the non stick wearing off. I butter the bread on the outside and use a wooden spatula to get them off. Did you preheat it before you put the sandwiches on?
Kaz, I prefer a cast iron griddle too.

I love doign toasties in mine - i find it cleans easier too if i leave it until its sort of warm and wipe it down.
I heard you can do veg in it but i tend to do chicken burgers, burgers, sausages, bacon etc
might have to try veg soonTime to find me again0 -
Thanks for reviving... Really want a toastie now (ham, cheese and onion).
I always put the cheese on top of them ham as more heat comes from the bottom. If you put the ham on the top, I found it only just warm.Love MSE, Las Vegas and chocolate!0 -
i use mine for loads of stuff - especially bacon. though once i tried an egg and it was a disaster (i know, i know....)
i just clean it while hot with some kitchen roll, and occasionally spray on some white vinegar and water solution and rub it off...Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0 -
About 18 months ago I was given a Forman's Grill. Only used it once as nowhere to store in the kitchen.
At Christmas we were given some really top quality Scottish Beef - mostly different cuts of steak. After a bit of thought last night we have found somewhere to locate it in the kitchen.
Have had a look at the Mega Index thread and can't find any info regarding hints, tips when using, etc.
Any help, including recipes, would be much appreciated!
