    Thanks superscaper,

I have an Athlon XP 2400, so I'll hold off for a while longer!

    Unless........

Is the workaround difficult, bearing in mind some of us are less techie than others.

Easy enough. Restart PC, Press F8 when booting up to get booting options. Select safe mode. Then when booted up, go to "Start" then "Run" and in the box type "sc config intelppm start=disabled" (but don't type the quotation marks ;)). Click ok. Then restart to reboot normally. And hey presto you should be able to install SP3 as you normally would without any problems. It could be you can install anyway, the crucial thing is whether you have the intelppm process running. If you've got an AMD chip then having it run doesn't cause any problems (until now with SP3  ) but also you can stop it running without negative consequence anyway.

    Thanks superscaper.

Will try it in the next few days.

The workaround seems straightforward, I must be more techie than I'd imagined. :D

It's not MS's responsibility to ensure that OEM's are using the correct images for AMD/Intel systems across their product range. That's what has caused this issue.

My OEM installation I did myself and it was just standard default install from a MS branded OEM disc. I wasn't aware of a specific AMD option.

...Problem seemed to be because of having an AMD processor so had to disable the Intel processor driver in safe mode first before installing and rebooting sp3.

Just for the record, the SP3 install I've just done worked perfectly first time round ( On an AMD Processor ).

I did clear out the old restore points and created a new one just beore the install, just to be safe. PC seems to be stable ( famous last words :rotfl:)

I don't know how many it affects but it also seems to depend on the installation of XP as well in particular some OEM installs. Although personally I built my PC myself and installed XP (OEM) quite normally and use an Athlon XP 1800 processor (don't laugh). But hardly anything unusual or exotic there at all (if a bit old). But yes seems like a rather large oversight (especially considering they delayed official update release because of conflicts with that retail software that noone uses).

Strange that as I also have an AMD 2100 and SP3 installed and no problems at all.

I don't run a OEM I have XP Pro that is a fresh install of SP2 integrated and SP3 installed over the top of all updates.

I have just been making an unatended SP3 for next time and been testing with VMware.
    Workarounds:

    1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.

    2. After booting into Safe Mode:

    Start | Run | (copy/paste) sc config intelppm start= disabled | OK | Reboot
    into normal (Windows) mode.

Seems like it only affects OEM installs as they use the Intel power management driver.
Basically, HP (and others) to save costs produce one hard disk image irrespective of the computer's processor type, and they install the Intel power management driver.

Now, it seems that until SP3 this didn't matter too much and the machine booted OK. However, something's changed in SP3 which means that the Intel power management driver crashes when it's run on an AMD chip (for which there is a separate driver which the OEM should have installed instead).

As already noted it's a combination of using an AMD processor and an OEM install of XP. Doesn't seem to be all installs but from my personal experience the standard Microsoft OEM disc seems to suffer the problem of installing the intel driver as standard.

    Just for the record.

I have a Genuine Microsoft OEM Home SP2 disk installation with an AMD XP2400.

    I updated via Windows Updates.

SP3 (61mb) took 30 mins to download. Normally that amount on my 2meg would take about 5 mins.
It then took approximately 90mins to install.

I deliberately didn't try superscapers workaround, but everything seems O.K

Mine's XP Pro, that seemed to make a difference as well when I spoke to Microsoft.

It's installed ok now, (there was a permissions problem on the My Music folder, and I'd copied Beethoven's 9th back into the folder - random requirement... took an absolutely age to run and install. Will test it this morning when I get time and see if it's quicker, but not rolling it out to the main machines just yet!

I am getting this same error when trying to so the sp3 update.
the beethovens 9th is not in the folder.
i will copy it from another machine to put back on.
what did you have to do for the permissions on the music folder.

    thank you
