Any ideas other than reinstalling XP completely?

    What exactly is happening?

Doesn't get past the Windows boot up screen (the one with the sliding blue bar which just cycles endlessly).

I would say that could be a hardware conflict.

Try unpluging everything but the basic hardware needed.

See if it completes, then reboot.

Turn off computer plug hardware back in one at a time and reboot computer between each one.

    Have you tried safe mode?

Safe mode works ok. Not really got anything I don't need other than maybe my wireless card. Can't be bothered taking that out at the moment. Maybe a weekend job.

Did you look for any conflicts in device manager? Personally, if it ain't broke why break it with a dodgy M$ 'update'!!!

Well everything is working ok under sp2 and when in safe mode in sp3 I couldn't see anything wrong or any conflicts. Will probably try again at weekend or at worst fresh install, just slipstreamed an sp3 disc.

Why is everyone rushing to apply SP3?

Wait for a few months, your computer won't die without it.
It's always good practice to wait a few months until all of the bugs have been ironed out before you start applying major updates to the system like SP3.

If you're having problems with SP3 then roll your system back to the point before you installed it and keep it off until all of the bugs have been ironed out and updates released.

Even with the monthly security patches, hold off for a few days after the bulletins have been released before installing them.

Unfortunately our server downloads all Service Packs and automatically applies them to all the client computers - should be exciting coming into work sometime this week!

I did not mean to leave the hardware out for ever, just give XP time to sort itself out rebooting one at a time.

If it works in safe mode it will be a hardware/driver issue.
