Just tried to install it on a test machine and it went crazy, because the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\Sample Music\Beethoven's 9th file was missing! I suspect it's a dodgy permissions issue (unless MS have made a very sensitive installer), will test and try again...

It's installed ok now, (there was a permissions problem on the My Music folder, and I'd copied Beethoven's 9th back into the folder - random requirement... took an absolutely age to run and install. Will test it this morning when I get time and see if it's quicker, but not rolling it out to the main machines just yet!

Slowed down my machine and then broke it. (Wouldn't boot up past loading screen). Going to have to try installing again and see if it makes any difference.

Superscaper, did you get this fixed? There's two workarounds for two different situations for the reboot problems. Let me know and I'll get the one for you.

Seem to have fixed it now. Problem seemed to be because of having an AMD processor so had to disable the Intel processor driver in safe mode first before installing and rebooting sp3.

Just to add Microsoft are aware of this problem, but I don't know whether they'll add a change to SP3 or simply rely on people to figure out they need the workaround.

That sounds a rather bad M$ oversight, considering the numbers of AMD processors in use!

I don't know how many it affects but it also seems to depend on the installation of XP as well in particular some OEM installs. Although personally I built my PC myself and installed XP (OEM) quite normally and use an Athlon XP 1800 processor (don't laugh). But hardly anything unusual or exotic there at all (if a bit old). But yes seems like a rather large oversight (especially considering they delayed official update release because of conflicts with that retail software that noone uses).

Glad that you have now sussed the problem but I would think that this could affect lots of users upgrading. Personally I don't ever take upgrades when they are released and wait for others to find the problems.

    Like me. :D

But yes I'm hardly techie newbie and I didn't exactly have it figured straight away, certainly not until others were reporting the same problems.

    Thanks superscaper,

I have an Athlon XP 2400, so I'll hold off for a while longer!

    Unless........

Is the workaround difficult, bearing in mind some of us are less techie than others.
    Move along, nothing to see.
