Roadside Recovery Policies Discussion

Having previously been with the AA for several years and paying around £40-£45 for Roadside assistance, I changed 2 years ago to join their chief rivals the RAC.
The reason for this was Tesco Clubcard Points.
Using Tesco Clubcard deals, if you are classed as a premium member, you can get RAC Roadside cover for just £11.25 in Clubcard vouchers. The RAC normally charge £45.
Add on an additional spouse which is £5.50, I'm paying £16.75 in Clubcard vouchers for a policy that retails at £67.00.
If you would prefer RAC Roadside and Recovery, the Clubcard voucher price works out as only £28.50 in vouchers.
If you are not a premium Clubcard holder you can still get the RAC deals for half their normal asking price in vouchers. ie Roadside would be £22.50. Add Recovery and its £42 in vouchers.
Hooray for Tescos Clubcard Deals.0 -

argh
last march someone very kindly paid for my AA cover for me and appears to have paid the all singing all dancing option 400 plus parts and labour cover.
to renew would cost £201 which I am obviously not gonna do.
I am doing a bit of research and getting quotes thru money supermarket, but am loathed to commit to gem, which appears to be coming up as the least expensive, just yet as I am worried that it doesn't give quite the level of cover for things like roadside, home start and relay as aa does (did).
but £33 compared to £119 is very attractive.
whaddya think people? is gem as "good" as aa on service or are there some catches that I need to look out for?
great point about tesco and RAC kahunahen - had forgotten that - am off to check the tesco site now ...Blah0 -
Is this number correct for AutAid 01277 235500 or does the hated 0870 number need to be used?
I've been with Auto Aid for more years than I care to remember, after a recommendation. Originally there was no national helpline number (0870 ...), you arranged your own repair/recovery (and got receipts), and they paid up. I've claimed too, and they paid up very promptly - they paid up before the Visa bill was due. Now the helpline number is an additional service. You don't have to ring it. You can arrange your own repair/recovery (plenty of firms in the Yellow Pages, if you can lay your hands on a copy when you're broken down !). That's what I've done all the times I've claimed.

Sorry to ask about one of martin's earlier tips.
Just bought a new car(money machine) and was thinking about ways to cut bills.

Does anyone have news about this contact number or whatever!!!!!!!!!.
THANKS

8) You may be interested to know that if you take out a SmileMore current account with Smile (Cooperative Bank) which costs £6 a month, you receive breakdown recovery for 1 car (with Green Flag I think) and also world-wide family travel insurance for the year plus a few other benefits like free overdraft.

Elsewhere on this site I complained about the pay and claim back system used by GEM and Autoaid becuase I had once had a call out with GEM and forgot to send off the claim. This meant I might as well not have had the insurance. Not a complaint about GEM really, just one about my own inefficiency - but a lot of people are like that.
I have, however, just signed up with Autoaid as it ocurred to me that the odds are that I won't have a call out in any given year. The cost of an ordinary recovery company was over £60 so I'm saving £30 if I have no call out. Even if I do have a call out, the basic cost is between forty and fifty pounds so one unclaimed call out will only lose me 20 squids - and I'll have saved more than that over the previous/following year. Also, I am likely to be more careful if I have a big claim. Hence I went for Autoaid.
Teeny moneysaving tip: call Autoaid on 01277 235500 rather than the 0870 mentioned in the article as it is cheaper (and I think the 0870 number isn't working).
Cheers

;D I would just like to say how very impressed I was with the standard of service from AutoAid and that I would recommend it to everyone (and I have!). I joined AutoAid in February, in March I broke down 16 miles from home, rang my usual garage who came and towed it back for me (£60). I sent my claim off that same day for the tow charge and within a week I had a cheque in my hand. Amazing! What more could you ask for? A years cover and peace of mind for £28. Absolute Bargain ;DThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
