Great Laser Eye Surgery Hunt

Just found this excellent offer with Optimax (if you live near or don't mind travelling to Aberdeen!).
Just at the Aberdeen clinic until 30 November you can have both eyes treated for the price of one.

You would need to find out if your aftercare consultations could be done at any of their other clinics if you aren't local to Aberdeen. But Lasik treatment for two eyes for £895 is fantastic.
It is first come first served and you will need to quote the offer reference 'Aberdeen Half Price 03/07' :cool:0 -
One of my primary concerns is night vision. I work shifts, so work any hour of the day, sometimes up to 12 hours including driving for periods throughout the night.
Obviously with lights from cars and street lighting I've heard about the starburst thing and burryness. Anyone had this experience or come across this?Amo L'Italia0 -
Thx theres always an element to risk but I belive its still relativly low and the highs are more higher.
When I approached my optician in 2002, he said thay whilst it is in its infancy, technology would progress, but not be sufficient to correct your sight, as you would still need some weak glasses for distance, but the onset of needing reading glasses in the near future, I would still need glasses to function anyhow.
I bough a new pair of glasses and have used bifocals from the age of 430 -

I copy below an extract from the March 2006 National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) report called "Photorefractive (laser) surgery for the correction of refractive errors"
The section 2.4.5 is relevant to your query, but I've included more in case anyone else is interested. I have heard of people having to give up their careers (eg an airline pilot) because of glare after having their eyes done. (I myself have bad glare at night, but that's the least of my problems.)
NICE gets it's conclusions by looking at data from relevant published reports. You might be aware that there is a public debate going on at the moment (not related to laser surgery specifically) about how companies and organisations tend to be selective about what clinical trials they report - ie perhaps someone who's spent £1m setting up a cosmetic surgery practice may not be inclined to publish data which reflects negatively on the procedures they are offering. Bear in mind, then, that although NICE is an independent authority, the data they base their conclusions on could be (is, as far as I'm concerned) under-reporting negative outcomes. Also, if the op permanently disables you, but your post-op eyesight is good, they tend to report this as a successful outcome!
I wonder how many people receiving laser corrective eye surgery are made aware of the following by the business men & women they are buying services from. (You may like to think of them as doctors, but they are doing what they do for commercial reasons, so they are primarily business people.) Also, I would recommend you ask the practitioner by what percentage his insurance premiums have gone up by in the last 5 years!
2.4 Safety
2.4.1 In eyes treated for myopia, loss of two lines of best spectacle-corrected visual acuity was seen in a median of 0.5% (0–20.5%) of eyes treated with PRK, 0% (0–8.2%) of eyes treated with LASEK and 0.6% (0–3%) of eyes treated with LASIK. Patients with high myopia were more likely to lose two or more lines of best spectacle-corrected visual acuity than those with moderate to low myopia.
2.4.2 Flap complications may occur during LASIK and LASEK, requiring conversion to PRK or postponement of ablation (with LASIK), and occasionally there may be loss of best spectacle corrected visual acuity. Epithelial in-growth was
reported in LASIK in a median of 1.3% (0.0–4.4%) of eyes.
2.4.3 Ectasia, a condition that can result from corneal thinning, is a serious complication related to refractive surgery that can lead to loss of vision. Data from the review estimated the risk of ectasia following LASIK as a median of 0.2% (range 0 to 0.87%; overall rate of 40/10,806 eyes). However, many of the affected eyes may have been selected inappropriately for LASIK treatment, and with
appropriate patient selection the rate might have been lower. Rates of ectasia were not reported following PRK, and very little information was reported about LASEK, with no cases of ectasia described in one case series of 171 eyes.
2.4.4 Microbial keratitis was only reported in LASIK studies and occurred in 0–0.16% of eyes. This incidence was similar to, or lower than, that reported for contact lens wearers.
2.4.5 Other patient-reported problems included visual difficulty in low light conditions, corneal haze, light halos and problems with glare. Significant
corneal haze was reported following all three procedures (in 0–31% of eyes treated with PRK, 0–25% with LASEK and 0–2% with LASIK). Glare and night vision difficulties were less common after LASIK. For more details, refer to the Sources
of evidence.
2.5 Other comments
2.5.1 These procedures can make it more difficult to measure accurately the intraocular pressure used to detect glaucoma, and the intraocular lens power required for cataract surgery. Techniques are available to address these difficulties, provided it is known that photorefractive surgery has previously been done.
2.5.2 It was recognised that this is a rapidly evolving procedure and that new techniques are emerging.
2.5.3 The current difficulties for patients in identifying properly trained practitioners for this procedure were noted. A working group of the Royal College of Opthalmologists is currently devising a set of defined learning outcomes and assessments for all those wishing to undertake laser refractive surgery."Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie
Which we ascribe to Heaven"

Some of the discounts you see advertised are not as good as they first seem, they tend to be only as cheap as that for those with nearly perfect vision. For information on different eye problems and laser eye care check out.
