    i say go for it!

i come from SE England but moved to North Wales after one visit, back in 1993 as i loved it straight away.

After 11 years there i moved to Aberdeenshire without even visiting and loved it more.

Now i live in Orkney, best place in the world.

I wouldn't go back to the SE if you paid me!

I finally moved to Inverness (Westhill, not Smithton as originally thought) in December 2008 and its absolutely brilliant! People are soooo friendly here and i only wish i'd done it sooner. Shopping-wise i can get just about everything in the cute little town centre...there's also a 24hr Tesco Extra only 10 mins away and its easily the biggest Tescos i have ever been to in the whole of UK.

When i'm back home and the weather's good, i'll go walking around Glen Affric and Loch Mullardoch...where the scenery is just stunning..with midges of course:p Also climbed Ben Macdui in Cairngorms (easy peasy) and Ben Nevis (not so easy peasy). Also went to Rockness festival in June to see what all the hoo haa was.

HOWEVER, getting to/from work in Libya is a bit of a hassle...Inverness has no flights to LHR, only to LGW so i would have to change airports and spend a night in London, so instead i take an early morning taxi to ABZ to catch the BA flight which connects with onward flight to Tripoli. Coming back, i'm home by 1am.

    The Highlands Rock!
Thanks for all the advice on here folks

Glad you got settled and are happy with your move. :)

Inverness is known locally as 'Tesco Town', so it doesn't surprise me that you view it as the biggest one you've seen.

Did you manage to find your way around in Winter in the dark btw?;):rotfl:

I love Scotland but would think twice about moving somewhere as remote as Inverness. Yes, it has an airport but if you lived somewhere rural (even within an hour's travel of Glasgow and Edinburgh, your transport links are much greater while the peace and quiet and quality of life is the same.

There are significantly more flights from Prestwick, Glasgow International and Edinburgh for your flight onward to Africa than from Inverness yet within a 20 minute drive of them is very tranquil countryside.

For example, the area around Loch Lomond (which actually has a regular train link into Glasgow), areas towards the East or West coast. There are hamlets very close to train lines in these areas.

I love the Highlands: However, beware... The Highlands in summer looks pretty good, especially if the sun is shining... but February, with those shorter-than-SE-England days and horizontal sleet cab make people go very odd...

When I moved up there my neighbour told me of an 11 week period when it rained every day: Thought she was making it up... nope, it happens...!!

    Cheers!

    Yours aye
