Major city? Come off it, there's a population of about 40,000. That's a medium-sized town!

Doesn't have to be big to be a city, just has to have a cathedral OR be designated as a city by some higher power. I would agree, it's not a "major city" when compared with some English cities. But on the other hand, it's the biggest centre of population oop-north!

  • Oh i forgot to ask one other thing: sometimes when you purchase online, the retailer adds a delivery surcharge to postcodes beginning with IV. Does this mean than deliveries to Inverness city and its suburbs are also surcharged or only to remote areas of the Highlands?

Usually any very large purchase gets surcharged anywhere north of Glasgow. No particular problem with Inverness though. It is served very well by all major and minor carriers.

We have a problem down here on Skye as some carriers/companies still think we are "overseas" or an Island. Citylink for one I know no longer consider Skye to be an Island due to teh bridge. If I ever get told it costs extra because its an Island I ask if they charge any extra to Anglesey? Usually they say no, so I can say no difference then. And then I just choose to buy elsewhere.

Inverness has been a city sine about 2000, I think? Recently, anyway.

I'm sure it's a wonderful place, I just think "major city" is pushing it for somewhere half the size of Cambridge or Ashford, and a third the size of Oxford.

The London borough I live in is 4 or 5 times bigger in terms of population.

Maybe not in terms of population, but if you think of the community it serves (vast swathes of the Highlands) then it has all the amenities of a big city.

For a huge part of Scotland, Inverness is where you go to buy stuff, go out at night etc etc. It is not the same as comparing it to London or Birmingham, as they don't serve a rural community in the same way.

Looking at the actual population is very misleading indeed.

    Hiya,
I live in Inverness and have done since I was little, I lived in Smithton for a bit, and now waiting for a new build near Smithton. Smithton is a nice area, and Inverness in general is lovely, and to be honest I don't think I see myself moving - I have a family here and it's just right for me. Yes you do get the odd traffic jam, but it is an expanding city. Inverness is good for shopping and night-life - so we get a lot of tourists and regulars from outside the city coming through to do their shopping etc... As for the postage to IV post-codes some websites do say this, but there have been a few I've used that haven't charged me extra. Anyway, really hope you enjoy living here!

That's because it's in the middle of nowhere, where I came into this thread (-:

iam a big caley fan,and even then the roundabout at the kessock bridge get a bit conjested, but police always directing traffic so a delay of 15-20 mins usually max

See another good reason to support County if/when you come up, little to no traffic when you get back to Inverness (Dingwall is about 15-20mins drive north of Inverness) :T
