it was purchased by a friend from a company called tristatecamera. he then send it to me via airmail. Actually at todays rates it would cost £1040

Remember that most credit cards will charge around 2.5-3% currency conversion charge so it will always work out a bit more than you expect. The rate today is 1.75 so that makes it £131 excluding the conversion charge that will bring it up to about £135, only £4 cheaper than the official UK price.
