New iPods. The iPod Nano (merged)

If you're thinking of buying the Nano. You might want to read THIS first. The scratching issue looks very bad (to the point of making the screen unreadable).
quoted from the article...........
People slavering to get Apple's "impossibly small" iPod Nano into their sticky hands may want to pause a moment: those ahead of them in the queue have discovered that it's also unbelievably easy to scratch the screen, nixing its photo-displaying abilities.
Apple's discussion forums are already host to a 188-post thread on the topic, where people have spotted that the plastic used for the screen and front of the product is as sensitive as a Kate Moss sponsor.
Trouble is that a few scratches will quickly make the colour screen all but useless for viewing album art and photos stored on the machine. In which case you might as well have bought the cheaper, screenless iPod shuffle, hmm?
I had a look at the Apple forums too. This problem is not only one or two Nanos. It is being noticed by LOADS of people. Looks like a design fault with the screen material. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Thanks for that Rex_Mundi.
I've owned around 6 iPods in various incarnations and I've always protected the screen with a PDA screen protector. If Apple decide to remanufacture the nano with a better type of plastic then I'll just sell my current one and get one of the new ones.
I rarely keep these gadgets for more than a year as I prefer to sell them on and get the latest version with a new warranty
Thanks to eBay I can sell things on and make only a minimal loss.
But I'm sure I'm the exception, and those considering a nano should perhaps wait to see how this issue pans out.0 -
I figure with the amount of complaints already out there (considering its only just been released). Apple will have to do something about this issue. Shops are already giving refunds for these new machines, yet there is no official word from Apple. It's surely only a matter of time before they do something (you would think).
This looks like a major !!!! up.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Yeah but knowing Apple I reckon will be a long time before they officially acknowledge the problem - like the battery fiasco.
This won't put off most nano buyers anyway, especially in the run-up to Christmas.0 -
I have purchased a clear nano decal on ebay to hopefully protect it from scratches.
Surely you would think the designers would put the nano through tests to see how well it stands upto wear and tear as people are saying it scratches in a cotton shirt pocketand that is not exactly hard going0 -
There could be a number of reasons why the plastic is so easily scratchable - cheap parts, insufficient testing, or...
<conspiracy mode>
Making them scratch easily reduces the resale value hence curbing the secondhand market and encourages repeat purchases when the "improved" version comes out. All IMHO of course

Besides, even if you could order it, customs duty, taxes, and handling fees would wipe out any saving.
I've got a friend out there atm - do you think the guarantee would be applicable over here if I got her to bring me one back?
Edit:
Just remembered son is going to NY in 10 days for a long weekend....................if guarantee is OK for here he could bring back one aswell

Yep the guarantee is supported worldwide for all Apple portable devices. That includes iPods, iBooks, Powerbooks. So you'll be fine

We ordered an InvisibleSHIELD to hopefully protect ours. I've heard they're good and they have a lifetime warranty but I've not put that to the test yet
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0
