There is plenty of information on the web about using cooking oil in place of diesel - and there's no tax on cooking oil. Someone I know uses it all the time. The car doesn't need modifying, and he's had no trouble at all. This a driver who volunteers as a driver for the local hospital picking up people to take them in.

Last year, in our area, HM Customs and Police were pulling over cars to check if they were diesel and taking samples from their tanks. I guess they were looking for those evading duty,

Er, right. But wouldn't that be checking that they are not using the duty free dyed (red?) diesel that farmers use?

Could be. Does a car fuelled by cooking oil smell?

Not on the inside, just the same as your diesel doesn't. On the outside - pedestrians might get the faintest suggestion of a chip shop flying by :)

I was in Omeath on Friday past and if I remember correctly, it was around 102 cents per litre. Have no Idea what that equates to in Sterling!

You can't just throw cooking oil in your tank - it needs to be Bio diesel. There are quite a few places selling it and it does work just fine. However be careful - unlike regular fuel (petrol or diesel) there is no industry standard or quality control.
