Has anyone ever noticed the colour of the diesel one of the stations in Omeath sells? I take a couple of tubs whenever I know I will be in the area, but on a couple of ocassions the colour has varied from a slight green tinge to an almost flourescent green. I have never seen 'green' diesel so can't compare them, but I was under the impression that the proper road diesel should be clear. If they are putting green diesel in their tanks, then they are cheating the customer over pricing, and the customer is also at risk for driving a road car with green diesel.

For the record, diesel can sometimes have a green tinge to it. I queried this with a well know NI supplier at one stage and I was told that depending on the process and chemicals used diesel can range from almost clear through stages of blue and green.

But if you really are concerned then contact Customs and Excise.

Would consider it, but then again as far as I know it's against the law for me to transport an extra 25/50 litres of diesel in tubs in my car

Sorry for peering over the water.... but diesel is close to my heart (and bank balance)...

Back during the fuel protests in whenever-it-was I got myself some military surplus 20 litre jerrycans (they're actually Swedish, so I tend to refer to them as 'Svencans' - but that's by the by) - nice thick steel walls, locking caps - cost me about £35 for 5 of them and since the protests I keep them all topped up, just in case (tend to empty & refill one every couple of months to keep it 'fresh' though - no idea if I need to do this or not, but better safe than sorry).

Allegedly if our friends in customs and excise stop you and you have more than 20 litres of fuel in the boot, no matter if its diesel in proper 'jerry' cans or not, they will confiscate the fuel and treat it as smuggling.

pgilc1 - That is my only concern. Paying for it and then having someone take it off you. It seems the attitude to this varies. A mate of mine told me about someone who was stopped by the police (PSNI not Garda). They pulled him over because the back end of the car was nearly touching the road. When they checked it out they found 14 25 litres tubs full of diesel. They queried its use (i.e. using it himself or selling it) and then sent him on his way with a cautionary note about not overloading the car in future. The car by the way was a Peugeot 405 estate.

This was about a year ago so the savings would have been higher. Glad I was sitting behind him in the forecourt!

Most filling stations over the border from Derry into Donegal are charging 99.9c per litre for both petrol and diesel (around 69p-70p) down from 103.9c/104.9c last week.

Very wise to keep the fuel fresh. What a bummer to need it and it didn't work.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Sorry, I am just back and the prices vary from 99.9 - 104.9 for petrol and 97.9 - 101.9 for Diesel. This is throughout Donegal. 97.9/99.9 available in Kernans at Newtownhamilton (about 5 miles from Stroke City, at Maxol in Letterkenny and in Dungloe. Remaining (higher) prices more general.
Shell in Donegal Town (turn left at Lidl on bypass) and Texaco on Killybegs Road normally cheapest in the area, but I was not there this weekend.

Prices at Bridgend, Muff and Killea (Derry-Donegal border) will generally be higher anyway. The Statoil on the road to Letterkenny (about 5 minutes past Bridgend) is 99.9c for both diesel and unleaded - so if you're travelling from Stroke City - this one's the one to hit!

I agree with you Declan, these stations get the cross border traffic and charge a little more.On the subject of Kilea: There are now two petrol stations in Kilea (on the old Letterkenny Road) a TOP Station and a Shell station. The Shell station is generally 1 cent less per litre. Late one evening, very recently I passed this station and it was closed - no lights, nothing. However in the forecourt there was a tanker which had recently arrived. Interestingly, it was not a Shell tanker. Draw your own conclusions, perhaps he was just lost and looking for directions.

The Statoil mentioned by Declan, the Maxol slightly farther down the road towards Letterkenny and Kernans all hold the same prices which are generally cheaper than the Letterkenny consortia. However, it pays to keep an eye open for a while earlier this year they joined the consortia (ring!) and had the same prices.

Knowing an owner of a petrol station in Letterkenny, I quized him as to why all the petrol prices in Letterkenny were the same and why they were all generally high. He just laughed and got rather red in the face.

    I found this site:

    http://www.petrolgauge.com/ie/

I don't know how long it's been there as a site - perhaps it's been posted on this forum before! - but it's user updatable and the user can list petrol stations from whatever county they wish and display petrol and diesel prices for that station. The most southern counties (Cork, Kerry, Wexford) seem to be the counties with the most information - but I think I'll spend a bit of time over the upcoming weekend to make some additions for Derry and Donegal.
