Im sure I heard about a fake wasp nest (Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2) which you hang up in your garden and after a couple days, wasps will keep away from it as they would any other wasps nest that has established in an area

They also had this on This Morning a while ago, can't remember what it was called . They may still have the details on their website.

  • Check with your home insurance provider as most providers on "newer" policies offer some sort of service for this. Depending on the deal there may or may not be an excess.

I can Co-Op up a sunday afternoon and they sent someone around that week who sprayed the wasps nest with a lance. No excess, no effect on my premium next year as doesnt count as a claim..... I was quite pleased!

I would have just left the nest until the winter however it was in a flat roof and causing a leak (or at least a large moisture stain) to go though and ruin the paper/destroy the plaster.

How its dead ive had to take the plaster away and get the nest out. A good 60x40x15cm space of solid nest so far.....
  • The neighbour behind us has a wasps nest under their guttering. They don't seem to be doing anything about it, presumably as they've been told the """s will die off soon.

Problem is that this morning I got up to find over 20 had got in through my air brick in the bathroom. Had to use nasty spray and wait till the buzzing died down! Either that or let them all over the house.

  • Hi there, I have a wasps nest very near my back door and as we have a 6 & 9 year old I am terrified about the wasps attacking them or their friends. Yesterday after a google search I went to the garden centre and bout ant killer powder and lobbed it down the hole. They are still there today.
I was thinking - what if I stuck the hose in it? Drowned the beggars???? Is this totally mad? Please don't tell me to pay to get anyone out - I don't have the dosh!
    Thanks.
ps the only wasp killer in the shop was stuff you light for a loft, it wouldn't work in the open I think
  • I know that you said you can't afford to call someone out, but my local council charges a lot less then commercial firms for this service. It might be worth a phone call to see how much they charge.

As the nest is by your back door, this may not help - but if you can wait it out, they will die off and wasps don't come back to an old nest.

If that's no good, I'd second the suggestion above and phone the council, they sorted out a nest for me a few years back that was underneath my lounge floorboards (got in through an air brick). They were very quick and efficient.

Whatever you do, don't put yourself at risk - a nest of furious wasps is not something I'd want to pick an argument with!

  • There is a good selection of wasp powders on amazon. Have a look and then see if your local shop has them.
  • A few of years ago I had a small nest in the garden and put derris powder around the entrance and then re-applied a week later - it worked.

Then the next year had another one in an air vent - tried the same but it didn't work. I read the queen leaves the nest after the summer, so I left it and this summer they did not come back.

They don't sting you unless you wind them up.
  • Try your local DIY stores. There are lots of powders on the market that you fire into the entrance and the wasps should be gone overnight.

Get some expanding foam filler and squirt that into the nest. Sure-fire way of killing them off...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
