I have a website and use Google Adsense and Amazon Web Services on it. Currently getting the equiverlant of about £50-70 from Google and about £50 from Amazon each month... even though I do pay around £10 for the hosting each month, the extra revenue does help to pay for it as well as pay for a few indulgencies...

...best thing is that now I have set it up, I do not have to do anything - of course if ever I want more I will have to tweak it, just too busy cutting back in other areas to want to work on it!
WSO - can you tell me who hosts your site for £10 per month? Most hosting quotes I can findf are for about £30...

Sure, I host my site with Gearhost - I'm on the gold plan and have been with the company since they were still new (back in 2002). Only thing is, the actual amount I pay varies depending on the market but it works out at around £10 a month give or take 50p either way.

Ali, my site is about helping potential Web Site Owners plan and develop a site - while I do not have any inspirational ideas for topics I do have guides to help you get it off the ground (see my earlier posts around page 1 for links to my guides).

One thing I can tell you, is that you will find it much easier to write about something you are interested in - if you do not enjoy it then it will seem like a job and you will loose interest. While I don't mind working on my site, I have new hobbies that I would rather spend my time on so I have not done any work on my own site for over a year... perhaps I should run a site about my new main interest (horses), or I could develop the driving site I bought the domain for 3 years ago... choices, choices...

Meanbean, yes I am based in the UK but I do not let different currencies put me off when buying stuff, if they deliver to me and it works out cheaper than me buying from the UK sites then I'll go for it - I've bought books from Amazon.com and have no qualms from ordering from reputable companies abroad.

The best thing about web hosting is that it is effectively a virtual product, so long as the host has good links to the main data pipes then there is little percievable difference to the end user. Even dedicated servers can be run sucessfully when they are at the other side of the world providing you choose the right host and care plan for your needs.

I have hosted with UK companies before and the best one I used and would happily recommend to people when I was using them was Hostroute. Unfortunately I had to move when they couldn't offer all the features on a windows server that I wanted (ASP and MySQL, which was a rare combination back then), otherwise I might still have been with them.

My first experience of hosting was with a well advertised UK company (they were featured prominently in every internet magazine I ever bought!)... however I certainly had the distinct impression that the money they should have spent on improving their reliability was spend on advertising instead! Seriously, I think I was with them about 2 years and in the last 5 months I was with them I had to reupload my site because their RAID servers had failed, not once, but twice! It seems they didn't learn their lesson. Bigger is not always better!

  • Hi folks - my first post on here, just have to say first that mse is the best website in the world!

I'm a web developer by day and this was the easiest thing for me to get into to raise some extra cash. However there are so many people out there doing it (as I've seen from this forum too) and non-techie people think it's really easy, that there just isn't the money to be made from spending my non-work hours in front of another PC doing the same stuff.

I've decided therefore to follow a long dream of mine - I'm having my garage converted into a workshop and intend to start making little bits of furniture (you know, nests of tables, picture frames, letter trays that sort of thing.

Much easier to put a value on a physical object, more rewarding to produce, gets your eyes away from the screen, and people love hand-made custom furniture.

With any luck it will grow well enough that I might go part time at work. I don't want to take a huge risk, and even a hundred pounds extra per month to spend on overpayments and the odd luxury would make a huge difference.

    Happy moneysaving!

    Cheers

There is an option of 'gold membership' for which you must pay, but i have never bothered and have done three trials through them(QUOTE)

I've given my details to Biotrax but can't find the button where I can do a trial without having to join first. Can you tell me what you select? Thanks for your help
