Sorry to revive an old thread, but I need a bit of advice!

Earlier this week when I got up in the morning, I noticed what looked like a slug trail on my rug (lovely!!) No sign of them, but then I understand they only sneak out at night. I cleaned it up and the following morning it was back again, so I sprinkled some salt on the rug and surrounding carpet and left it overnight.

The following morning, the salt seemed untouched and no sign of trails. I had to leave the salt as didn't have time to hoover before I went to work. When I got home (this was last night) I cleared it all up and thought all was well, but now it seems that the salt had gone a bit damp and the carpet now has moist patches (not visible, but feel damp to the touch).

I have hoovered again since then but it still seems a bit damp =/ Shall I try and clean it with something else to get the salt out? Or do I need to dry it out first (i'm thinking of putting the heating on).

The trail wasn't there this morning, so I can only assume the culprit is in hiding, or gone elsewhere. I blame my courgette/cucumber plants if I have a slimy invasion!

Edit. !!!!!!, just picked up my laptray and it has a dried trail on the fabric, so there must be one somewhere. Right, weekend job is to lift the carpet edges and.....do something. Grr!

  • Not sure if it is this forum which can help, but I seem to be having visits from slugs. I have never seen them, but have seen their trails on my brushed stainless steel bin!

Now, I obviously don't want them around, so how can I ensure they don't get in and is there anything I can spray on the bin? Ideally eco friendly, but if that doesn't work, will use anything to ensure the b****rs stay away!

    Hi GTQ

There should be some suggestions in this thread (which i can merge this with later) - or alternatively I can move this to the In my home board once you get some more input from the OSers.

Let me know which would help you more

  • Eurgh, the other night, I opened my back door and there was eight enormous slugs and the biggest snail I have ever seen outside on the platform. It gave me the heebie jeebies. The only thing which was different was that the dogs dish had been outside all day as she'd had fish and I can't stand them smell in the house. It seems to have attracted them. Don't know if this helps you or not, but they haven't been back since. Well, they are in the wheelie bin, TBH. And that snail was huge, my husband thought I was having him on until I dragged him downstairs to see it. The shell was the size of a golf ball.

If you can trace the trails back to where they are getting in then you can try and put up barriers to stop them eg a line of salt outside (renew after rain) a piece of copper tape across a doorway etc.

Hi, I live in a big ol' victorian terrace with more holes than a string vest. I get them quite often at night, they are vile.

The only thing I found to help was to empty the bin last thing at night and to put salt around the outside walls.

I get Mr. bb to get rid of them. I just can't do it. It makes me puke.
  • i am at war with them at the moment , they seem to be all over my drive, i have been putting slug pellets down one side and have caught loads , i don't really like killing things but they were everywhere

It's all the warmish damp weather I think they like.

I have found slug pellets work, but they seem to make them sort of 'explode' and I just can't deal with the aftermath.

I use salt everytime I see one and just leave them to the old man, he doesn't seem to have the same revulsion for them, thank god.

Line of salt at any points you know they are getting in (indoors n outdoors), works a treat.

:( Can anybody help me with a slug issue please? My house is very, very old. Every morning when I get up there are slug trails around and when I've been up through the night I've actually found slugs walking around the kitchen and living room, blleeurgh!

I've tried salt but feel too terrible about the slow death thing. I've blocked the spaces that I can find but they still get in somehow and I can't put pellets down as I have a dog and I'm frightened she eats them. Does anybody have any advice at all please?

    :)
