+1. I'm afraid we have them too and resort to leaving out slug pellets on a night when the kids are in bed and the dogs are out of the room.

Just showing some empathy for your dilemma, I know how horrible it is and I often thought it was just us! I hope you find a solution soon. x

We used to get loads in our old house, and while I don't have a decent 'get rid' method, I would say that watch if you're leaving dog food down overnight as that can attract them in more. I used to leave dry biscuits out for the cat and would find the trails converging round the bowl - and one morning a fat slug in the water bowl with the cat sat staring at it in bemusement :) Stopped having it out and they did seem to reduce in numbers, though would still get the odd few.
  • I get them all the time too. Not wild about them but just find it mildly annoying and get a piece of paper or cardboard and sling them out of the door. (You really don't want to pick one up in your fingers. Not being particularly squeamish I tried this and you cannot get rid of the slime!)

My only real concern would be for pets because of lungworm. I have (indoor only) cats and see no sign that they attempt to eat the slugs, but it's worth thinking about.

We used to get them a lot when we lived in Manchester. Apparently the area where we lived used to be marshes and the slugs love the dampness of the place! We tried the old method of leaving a jar of beer if the ground to try and trap them. Can't remember if it worked but it was a good use of the cheap studenty beer :rotfl:

I had about 40 slugs in the rabbit pen the other night. They crawl all over the bunnies.
I have at least 20 in the garage on any night, they crawl in the kitchen and in the lounge, even had them in the parrot cage.

My dog got lung worm and nearly died last year.

I tried everything...salt leaves a mess, cannot use pellets so this week i am getting some chickens!

We get hundreds of slugs in our new shed, which just happens to be where our freezer and utility room is, only on the wall so no standing risk, but i refuse to go in there at night, hubby once counted one wall and got to 75 and stopped.

Anyway it's a old mobile office thing and we havent long moved in so only getting round 2 sorting it but how do slug pellets work? if i put a pot of them in will they be attacted to them or do i need to spread them out? and will i find dead slugs everywhere? also will it acually deter them?

You should try not to let your cats and dogs eat slugs or snails, they can carry lungworm which can be fatal to your pets.

I understand about lungworm. Not much I can do if I come down in the morning and find a trail with no slug at the end of it. Luckily, we have only had 2 in the past 3 years where this has happened. On top of that maybe 3 or 4 more slugs that we have taken back outside. Unfortunately you can't police your own and others gardens and a cat 24/7. It's no excuse for taking pleasure in torturing another creature to death in my mind.

  • I had slug issues too. every time I turned my kitchen light on, BAM slugs freakin everywhere!

We have an old office light in our kitchen and it takes a few seconds for it to ping on, so I ended up just leaving it on so I didn't have to wait 5 seconds or more before I could set foot in the kitchen just in case I stood on one of the ugly cretins.

but then I realised when I left the light on, they didn't show up. soon as I turned it off, within the hour the little blighters were everywhere again. so I just leave the light on. Slugs hate light. it's that simple.

obviously, it was fine for us because we have one of those long office light things and they ain't exactly power guzzlers. others, especially those with living room lighting, may not find this is a suitable trade off. but from what I've seen, light works a treat. I saw one peeping out from behind a counter the other day but he didn't fancy taking his chances. considering I used to get slugs easily the size of my hand, (and I'm 6ft 5 so I have large hands) this to me is a wonderful trade off.
