As already mentioned, if you cancel an existing Sky service your old card will let you recieve EVERYTHING you'd get with a "Freesat from Sky" card.

Basically on Satellite (n.b. Not "Sky") there are a whole bunch of free, not encrypted channels you could get without the card or indeed with a generic Satellite reciever (not a Sky Digibox) - this includes the BBC channels.

The Freesat card, or an expired Sky card will additionally unencrypt ITV, CH4 and CH5 which are only encrypted because of rights issues, rather than the channels wanting people to subscribe.

So in short - DO NOT buy a "freesat from Sky" card if you are cancelling an existing Sky subscription as it will turn you into a money wasting expert ;D ;D
  • Argos have Goodmans Set Top Box for £29.99

    http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=2501&langId=-1&productId=116104

Hope that works. the product code is 532/0967 and they are in stock (online reserve) to collect by friday. Is this a good freeview box worth £30 or a bit of a red herring?

Hyper-fi are known for the trick of "we don't have any at the sale price but..." in fact they got prosecuted for it.
  • Hello all, happy new year and all that! Idid buy the goodmans freeview box from argos at £29.99, set it up with no problem at all and my in laws are very pleased and they were planning to buy one anyway! BUT yes i bought the freesat card and realise now i never had to, could have used my cancelled sky card!! so yes wasted my money. (if anyone wants to buy a freesat card....?) Anyway the freeview does have better channels and you dont have to spend ages going thro loads of channels you havent got!!

a bit unrelated, but I need to know whether any of you knows where to buy the cheapest satellite dishes. i would like to be able to watch see spanish-speaking channels (spain/latinamerica/latin-usa). any ideas will be greatly appreciated

    ;D thanks!!
  • This site is fab by the way! I'm a frequent reader but not a frequent poster.

I bought the Technosonic box from Boots on recommendation from this forum and so far it has been returned to Boots twice.

First time it stopped me playing back my videotapes through it and the second one I got didn't remember my Favourites and when you switched it off it deleted some of the channels (inc ITV and CH4).

I have now got a Echostar Plus from Woolies and it is fantastic! I love the fact that you can see the next 8 days worth of TV and the simple way of using the Timer for using your VCR.

I'm really happy with it and want to thank the 'posters' on this topic for bringing it to my attention.

You dont need the box to pick up the channels, just the main input lead that comes from outside.

Plug this lead into your tv ariel socket( you will need an adapter) and re tune your telly. channels vary what you get, we use it in one of the rooms and get 1 2 3 4 5. sky one. tcm, a music channel.

I just did that about 5mins ago with the kids tv upstairs... 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 are excellent quality, but when I tune through the entire frequency range, I can see other channels, but they're semi-encrypted so they cannot be watched... no sky one, no tcm and no music channel - I'm guessing this could vary from franchise to franchise as our area was C&W at one time (now NTL)

http://www.geocities.com/digitalsatuk/langsat.html will provide details of which satellites carry the spanish channels and https://www.!!!!!!.uk sell dishes, boxes etc. You could also try eBay although I wouldn't recommend a SkyDigibox for this task.

I notice in today's paper that ASDA are selling their own-brand Pacific Freeview box with two SCART sockets (and a SCART lead included) for £34.87. They claim it is the cheapest around and will beat any advertised cheaper price/offer.
"Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."
