Just phoned Tescos to complain about 50% price rises for value ingredients plus our local store has been out of stock of some value items for 2 months . I see this as a deliberate policy to try to get us to pay for the dearer items. Spoke to a very nice lady in Scotland who agreed I was right to at least register my complaint.

Hehe the price has gone back down now..:p :p :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'm starting to notice that Sainsburys are getting cheaper than Mr Ts due to a wider range of basics products (particularly veg). Mr Ts also seem to have shorter shelf lives. I actually shop in ASDA now which is in the next village because overall I've found them to be cheaper. However, basics like milk, canned tomatoes, cheese and eggs all seem to be going up in price like there's no tomorrow. I see petrol prices are on the rise now too.

I'm in the same boat as hardup hester - food prices went up but my salary went down due to income tax. My line manager couldn't believe it when I told her how much I earn after tax! And due to my company's policy she does not have the authority to give me a raise.

My other half is an assistant manager and I am a buyer's assistant so we don't have bad jobs. But we do have a very minimal income in relation to food ands living costs. We've even had to sell our car and borrow my dad's for stuff like picking up my stepson at weekends. We have a worse standard of life than when I was a student and my OH worked in a factory and yet we now earn double.
Absolutely agree with this - can hardly believe the difference, feel Tesco is a big rip-off now. Also for me I don't get as side-tracked into looking at all the sauces and world foods at Sainsbury's. Maybe because if we go to Tesco we have to drive, but I pop into Sainsbury's on my way to and from work so I have to carry it!

I normally shop at Tesco but I also liked to go to Asda's occasionally for a change. Last night we needed to get some shopping and as Asda was on the way back from a trip out we decided to go there.

The bill came to slightly less than I normally spend for my fortnightly shop at Tesco and yet we'd really stocked up on some things, as well as buying a couple of items of clothing.

Told hubby that I think we'll be shopping there more often.

I registered for the online shopping at Asda when they opened near us but didn't use it for a while. When I went to do an online shop, I'd forgotten the PIN and was told to ring CS. Now, I hate talking to people on the phone, so I went and did my shopping at Tesco.
Why do they not have a simple system in place like every other site that needs a password? Ringing costs money too.

    /end rant!
  • I would certainly agree re Sainsbury's being cheaper the Tesco. I used to go to T's all the time as it is the nearest, with smaller shops in Lidl for specific items we like from there. I now only use T's for top ups of bread and milk as the extra cost for food is minimal compared to the extra diesel to get to Sains. I travel an extra 10 miles round trip to Sains usually every 2 weeks, but it saves me lots of money and I have found that the family like more of their basics items than T's value. They have a better ethical stance on their food too as even the basics fish is line caught or FSC endorsed, and the basics eggs are barn rather than caged. (now I know there is a slim difference, but it's there ;) and not everyone can afford to buy FR). Their organic milk is is 2x 4pts for £3 (seems to have been this price for ever and no sign of changing) which is cheaper than T's normal milk too.

Yeah but I can't do that. I don't eat cereals and I need oats also for cooking and baking.

Pot or pearl barley? Flour? Dried instant potato (mega cheap in value lines)? TVP? Maize meal? Gram flour? Marrowfat peas? Muesli with the dried fruit picked out? (Less than 60p in Mr S and not many sultanas in as you might expect). There must be some acceptable substitute.

I never give up the fight to foil the b****** attempts to increase my food spend.
  • OMG went to top up my store cupboard with a couple of tins of H soup and it has gone up to a whopping 82p for a can! It seems that since the credit crunch has happened all the things that people use to save a few pence, the prices have gone through the roof - The Manufacturers and Supermarkets are trying to screw as much out of us as they possibly can we don't stand a chance

I went into Tesco last week with my DD.I haven't been in there for about 8 weeks. I couldn't believe how much the prices have increased yet again. I have now decided that B and M bargains and Aldi are the best places for me to shop. The heinz soup was 49p a tin in B and M's but they didn't have all the varieties. I also shop in poundland.
If i did all my shopping in one place Like Tesco my bill would be at least £100 a week. That is for 4 adults and one cat. I just don't know how other people are managing as we are really struggling now.

There is no one price. it depends on what you buy, Free range, organic, Value etc. and where you buy it from, Super market, Local Butchers, Farmers Market etc.
