  • Try Sainsburys - I was in there today and they still have value peanut butter and honey. I agree with you that all the other supermarkets are "losing" value brands.
It makes me so angry that when people really need to cut back in a reccession they try to screw every last penny out of you

I bought 5lbs of Asda Smart price honey this week. Its 85p for 454g and was the best price I could find.

  • Tesco are replacing some value brands with 'daisy' and 'market value' (plus a few others I can't remember). I'm not sure if these are the same price or more money!

More people are buying the value brands over the last few months. The shelves are often empty, so I have to stock up when they have value items in.

But the value brands are much more expensive now, even when they have them. Tesco value pasta used to be 19p and is now 38p. Value bread used to be about 18p and is now 44p!

In my view Tesco are rebranding (and repricing ) Value stuff because there was a large proportion of the population who were too snobby to buy from the Value range. So they have made it look like branded items when in reality it's just Value by another name but more expensive.

I find I have to be really careful in Tesco now as often the discount brand is cheaper than value or it's the other way round and you have to check price per 100g etc. to make sure you're getting the best value - they are of course up to their usual trick of showing some prices per 100g and some per kilo so you have to have your maths brain on to keep an eye on prices.

Sainsbury don't deliver to me but I might start taking a trip over for a Basics top up now and again, I already do this with Asda.

It really does make shopping quite hard work!

has anyone else noticed how the tesco value range is getting less.
in my local tesco they have stopped doing value brown bread, value peanut butter and value pasta sauce......just in the past week.
the sales assistant said they wanted to concentrate on the other ranges like daisy and oakfield etc.
    is this happening else where?
    thanks

I've always accepted that my food bills are higher than most, myself and my husband follow a strict diet and it's part and parcel of the "deal".

Christmas we decided to make an effort to reign in our spending as it was getting insance £700 per month wasn't unheard off

We cut back our food and lived out of the cuboards for a while cutting back to about £50 a week, while we recovered our debt situation, i moved the kids off school dinners and onto packed lunches... followed LOAD of good recipes and idea's for cutting down our food bills.

Now heres the thing, comparing the shopping recipes for Jan v's March, the bought items where reasonably similar, not suprising when myself and my husband follow carefully laid out nutrition plans enabling me to buy food for exact needs which are almost identical each and every month. However the bill at the end of the month last month was almost £150 MORE than Jans and looking down the list it's really quite shocking the difference in prices on some items in just a couple of months.

£70 a week for food is just about managable (£280 for the month) but im really worried about the way food prices are rising, we can't afford for it to go up much more... we are in debt and struggling NOW and i can begin to discribe how badly it would impact us as a family if we had to give up our personal goals and give up on our lifestyle.

When i used to eat badly i was constently struggling with hormone imbalances and my diet is pretty much my one "vice", we don't drink, smoke go out or have any other hobbys that can be cut. I know it sounds melodramatic but my change of diet was spured by a suggestion by my doctor who thought it would help me cope with life better. At the time i didn't take her seriously but at the time i was sooooo desperate to become a good and cabable mother to my children i was willing to give anything a go.

These days im a true beliver that a good diet is the key to a happy life because since i DID change my diet my life and the life of the people close to me has been 150% better and for the first time in my whole life im NOT a walking medicine cabinate or "in and out" of hospital and im finally a good mother to my kids.

Seriously i can't begin to discribe the fear i have that maybe foodprices will rise to such a level i can no-longer afford to keep my way of life, im terrified of slipping back to where i was.

have you tried bulk buying stuff and not just relying on the supermarkets .
it just that i bulk buy my meat and potatoes from makro ,
i usually get a huge piece of sirloin or rump steak for £35 this when cut makes roughly 36 good size steaks and a good 1lb of diced steak which goes a long way these work out at less than £1 per steak which is about a third of the price of the supermarkets steaks .
i also had a full lamb for £59 which again may seem a lot on the initial outlay but again this goes a long way .
i alternate the months on which i buy these ,ie month 1 i will buy steak month 2 i will buy the lamb month 3 i buy pork .
i know you have a high protien diet and sorry is it low carb .
i also went to the market on sunday and had a huge tray of grapes for £1 and a tray of plums for a £1 .
i dont know if any of this will help
