I've noticed this too. I don't buy much salad at this time of year, but my 2.5yr old daughter is addicted to cucumber, and as she won't eat many other veges voluntarily I don't mind. Hope they stabilise soon!

This thread came up the other week: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1490915&highlight=cucumber

I managed to get one for 70p at the market the other week, but as it's only for my bunny rabbit, I won't buy it at over the 75/80p mark!
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
  • I'll add this to the exisitng thread on price rises.

  • Sainsburys Basics peanut butter is nice - as is the Lidl one. Not much use to you though Nesssie I know. Don't the co-op do a cheap-ish one?

The best peanut butter I think comes from Aldi. Can't think of the brand, but it has a red lid for the crunchy and a blue one for the smooth. It is always on sale there so it must be one of their stock lines

instead of standard salad (I agree cucumbers are crazy money at the moment!) I make a crunchy winter salad with shredded red cabbage, carrots, fennel (which seems cheaper now than for a while?) and perhaps a bit of apple and a few raisins to tempt the kids, goes lovely with a jacket potato and either pork chop or some tuna x
  • Mum26 that sounds yummy" I think fennell is in season now maybe?

I decided earlier in the week that I'm only having cucumber and fresh toms once a month for the time being. I worked out i was spending about £80 on salad veg each month just for me, which is insane! If I try your salad recipie I don't have to go cold turkey from salad completely!

Feeling a bit scared about prices now, went to buy some oats and Tesco value have now gone up from 58p to 88p. 50% increase!Tesco own brand now work out slightly cheaper than the value ones. Asda SP are still 58p.
wow they were 58p here a coupla days ago. I don't think they have gone up 30p? Maybe it is a pricing error somewhere.

For a truly lovely winter salad, try red cabbage coleslaw.

Chop finely a piece of red cabbage, add grated carrot and chopped onion, chopped apple and for a bit of novelty (but still perfectly seasonal) a chunk of celeriac. Dress with a mix of olive oil, pinch of mustard, pinch of salt, bit of vinegar and spoonful of mayonnaise. It is soooo nice and moreish! Best left for a little while for the flavours to settle together before eating.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
