I love Marmite too, but have been buying either Asda own brand or the one they sell in Lidl for years now - I think it is a bit stronger in taste than Marmite, so you can use less if you don't like it too strong. I like it fairly thick though (DH HATES it and won't even sit next to me when I am eating it if he can avoid it!!).The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"

I don't believe there is a real alternative to Marmite. I've tried various other versions but nothing comes close. I know it's expensive for a small quantity of food but it lasts for ages. My only advice is to rationalise the cost by considering how much it costs you per week rather than the price when you put it in the trolley.;)Avoiding plastic, palm oil, UPF and Nestlé0

 Use less? I'm a bit of a glutton with Marmite - somehow managed to convert MrEL as well (he wouldn't even kiss me and would pull silly faces, but I managed to presuade him it was worth the 'risk' I guesshe now eats it thinly spread and likes it. Victory for the Marmite lovers - another conversion:T
Anyhoo thanks all, I just think for me it might be one of those things it's hard to compromise on...
Re: Jam, luckily our mother in law goes to France often and they do Bonne Mamman which I love and is cheaper there... plus the supermarkets there do their own version of Bonne Mamman which is amazing too and I like as well.

I've had that. Didnt like it at first but now it's growing on me. Tastes like wine. I have never had champagne so don't know if it tastes like it or not. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
Ahhhh the dreaded marmite, it doesn't matter how long you spend convincing me I wouldn't touch the stuff OH and my 18 month old son love it but my 3 year old daughter won't go near it. I always tell OH not to come near me until he has brushed his teeth if he has it lolMummy to two beautiful girls and one gorgeous boy.0

I would say if you buy more fresh things i.e. fruit, veg and meat then Sainsburys usually has better offers than tesco on these items IMHOMummy to two beautiful girls and one gorgeous boy.0

Smiler also Sainsburys does Value veg and fruit and our Tescos do not. Nothing wrong with the value stuff just not the uniform shape etc...What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

I'm not sure whether to stock up on the stuff we use a lot of, e.g. chopped tomatoes, which have gone from 21p to 33p, in case they go up more or whether to wait in case they drop with the recession.
The ones from Lidl and Netto are 33p also, but much better quality than Value ones. And this week at Netto you can currently get 4-packs of branded ones (Prince's) for 99p, while stocks last. I went yesterday and stocked up on 10 packs (and 2 x 18-packs of Nouvelle loo roll for £3.99 a pack).Operation Get in Shape

I went to Sainburys this morning for a few fresh bits ( main shopping Asda internet) as I usually do on a Friday and found that 1/2 cucumber has gone up in price from 36p to 64p. How can this be ? I checked with the assistant and he said it was the correct price.
I could not beleive it as the cucumber has been 36p for ages. Is there a shortage in cucmbers that I do not know about?
I know it sound a bit petty but just needed to rant.
