Trying really hard to OS but the prices keep going up

Some of the value stuff is now more expensive than the normal stuff.
E.g. Tesco Value porridge oats 58p for 1kg
Sainsburys own porridge oats 85p 1.5kg (57p/kg) - and much nicer too.
I'm not sure whether to stock up on the stuff we use a lot of, e.g. chopped tomatoes, which have gone from 21p to 33p, in case they go up more or whether to wait in case they drop with the recession.0 -
I thought I was going mad because everything seemed to be going up and I saw on the news that food prices were stabalising and some coming down. I can't see what is suppose to be coming down. Was in Asda last week and smartprice oranges were on rollback at 37p. I thought great, then noticed that there was only 4 instead of six or seven in the pack. Today, it still says rollback but is 50p for four.Second purse £101/100

The Morrisons value porridge oats are now 85p too, it`s not long since they were 55p. The value things are either disappearing or rocketing in price.
The value ranges are what keep us going but it`s getting really difficult. I think that the supermarkets arn`t playing fair and as people are dropping the big brands they are increasing their profits by ripping them off even more with the value items.
I can`t see any way around it.

About buttering one side of the bread for sandwiches, i do the same thing too, except if it is a 'wet' filling, like canned tuna with sweetcorn, i find the bread goes quite soggy if it doesn;t have the margarine barrier on both pieces of the bread .
Kathlicos, i used to have the same problem with the wet fillings in sandwiches, i tried different recipes in my bm and found a loaf which was a bit more dense. I can now mix tuna, onion and mayo and make the sandwiches an hour before leaving for w*rk and they are fine. If i`m making a filling like this i don`t bother with any butter at all now.
I spent an hour looking for the prices of flour from the mills yesterday. None are close enough to visit and the prices are quite steep, the postage can be quite a bit too. There was only one site that seemed reasonable so i won`t be considering it now unless he supermarket prices climb any more. I`ve bookmarked a couple of sites for future reference though.

I noticed how the price of peanut butter hs shot up too!
I tried Tesco value for the first time acouple of months ago and really liked it. Now the jar has finished and I can't get any more as my local shop hasn't got any and the cheapest jars are more than £2.
Morrisons has quite a nice own brand one for 60-70p though.0 -
I looked on Asda website and they also have an own brand one for 78p.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

I buy this one too - however it used to be £0.55p and is now £0.69... still not bad for the amount MrEL gets through (a jar every couple of weeks):T My 'crime' is Marmite - one 200g pot every 3 months - any recommendations for cheaper alternatives that taste as good? Will give it a go but pretty sure real Marmite is one of my staples...

Our Sainsburys doesnt sell value porridge... I have noticed a lot of T selling value stuff S doesnt and vice versa so you can't compare
Eager there sadly doesnt seem to be a cheaper nice alternative to Marmite . Maybe keep that as a treat. I did the same with M&S jam today. I really don't like value jams and at the rate I use it it's worth my while to save as a treat as it tends to last months on end.Plus M&S is not that highly priced in comparsion with say Branded or Tesco Finest and is Fairtrade. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
The exchange rate has a lot to do with the increasing costs - unseasonal fruit and veg, tinned toms and peanuts are all imported. As an example, the £ has now dropped by roughly a third against the euro and the tinned toms usually imported from Italy have gone up by roughly a third. Unless the £ gains some ground I don't think we are likely to see price reductions anytime soon.0

Lidl do a yeast extract spread. I can't remember what the price was now but I know it was cheaper than Marmite. I wish I could find a cheaper version of Bovril, I rarely buy it now except as a special treat for bonfire night.0
