instead of standard salad (I agree cucumbers are crazy money at the moment!) I make a crunchy winter salad with shredded red cabbage, carrots, fennel (which seems cheaper now than for a while?) and perhaps a bit of apple and a few raisins to tempt the kids, goes lovely with a jacket potato and either pork chop or some tuna x

That sounds very similar to something I used to make for my DD when she was small. I sliced red and white cabbage, added grated carrots and chopped apple, then bunged in some sultanas.
She loved to sit watching tv with a big bowlful of that! She's 23 now and coming to visit in a couple of weeks, so I'm planning to make her some when she's down here. :)

Kinda cancels out the 2p off curry sauce down to 13p from 20p a while back??

Has anyone thought of complaining? It is not like Tescos are not making rocketing profits off us all. That's Scandalous!

A lot of winter root veg (but NOT potatoes, although I have seen sweet potato done like that - but not my favourite when raw I'm afraid!) can be turned into salad, even swede, if you add some extra flavouring, like chopped garlic, onion, herbs, toasted seeds, raisins etc... and a nice vinagrette!

Don't waste money on tomatoes in winter, even the ones coming from a long way are totally flavourless! And no good for the environment!

A lightly steamed platter of savoy cabbage, carrot, onion and potato, sprinkled with olive oil and a splash of lemon juice is a really nice warm alternative to salad, too!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • I went in Asdas today to get some short grain rice for a nice pud and it has gone from 48p to 84p a box they are really taking the p*** now!

  • Got some seeds today to start off my veggie garden - I couldn't believe the price of seeds, but it will still work out cheaper than adding to the supermarkets profits.

Bread flour has gone up 20p per kilo and a half too. I'm hoping that will fall again soon though, as bread is falling (well, some of it)
And, my apples that were 37p a kilo, are now 63p a kilo grrr.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

Don't throw away food challenge started 30/10/11 £4.45 wasted.

    Storecard balance -[STRIKE] £786.60[/STRIKE] £708
  • Have you lot noticed that the whoopsies are not nearly as cheap as they used to be?

TBh I really do think we all ought to complain when these things double in price etc. They have to take notice of the people who spend their money there or we will just go elsewhere. Or Not if you are like me and only have Tescos within reach lol.. but its the POINT of the thing..I know it won't matter a hill of beans when I call them to complain about the oats etc but if everyone did it all the time. They have to know customers are NOT happy and won't just take these increases lying down.Especially when like the oats there is no darn reason for a doubling of cost in a couple of days.

How much are the value cornflakes? If oats go up I don't carry on buying them: I go find something cheaper. Flexibility is key to foiling the !!!!!!s.
