Basically with the crunch, a whole lot more people are out there buying 'loss leaders'. People who would have been embarrassed to be caught with it in their trolleys six months ago.

And if everyone buys lots of loss leaders... yup, they're going to... well, no, I can't see Mr S running at a loss. But not their normal fat, fat, gross obese profits, either.

They're trying to discourage the new converts: to make the difference small enough to have them go, 'Well, it's hardly worth it for that saving, we might as well shell out for the posh brand'.

Bit hard on us long-time skinflints, though.

I doubt curry sauce will be 4p for much longer. Grab it while it lasts, peeps...

well, i'm not too discouraged yet. I don't write my shopping list then try to find the cheapest stockists: I buy what's cheap then work out what I can make out of it.

Let's have a thread on that - buy anything that's insanely cheap then we all chip in with recipes. I suppose there already is one!

I think Penny was saying, ''hope this helps'' ;)

For a list of abbreviations commonly used on MSE, this might help: abbreviations :)

if everyone panics. A lot has more to do with psychology and world markets than supply.

THe UK is about 60-70 percent sufficent in vegetables but only 5% in fruit. Since 20&% of some fruit and vegs are thrown away as not meeting EU standard (going this July) and we throw away 30% of what we buy, I reckon that real shortages in veggies will be snall, but fruit will be hard.

If we stop making spirits from grain and reduce our meat eating, there is enough to feed people, but fruit will be hard to come by.
