This morning I downloaded the new Avg free 8.0.1 thinking it was such a good deal and upon the first scan it found 213 infections, spyware and trojans (trojan Bomka, downloader conhook, trojan zlob f, vundo-adware etc) A lot were activex from Internet Explorer which I never use. I use Firefox, spyware blaster and Nod 32 which never found anything on scanning. I deleted all of them and went back to Nod 32. I have no explanation for this, as I am a very careful surfer and do not visit risky sites, nor open email attachments. Could all these have been false positives? It is strange that Nod 32 never found anything???????

Found exactly the same I found on a test system, which couldn't be cleaner, in fact it's never used on an active internet connection! It went crazy on IE active-x items, don't worry, these must be false positives.

My final opinion - Really unimpressed with v8.

Just found it disabled 190 items protected by the excellent SpywareBlaster (by falsely suggestion they were infections). That combined with the huge leap in required resources, system slow down, interference with browsing, and initial problems with HTML email has led me to remove it from the test machine, and roll back to v7.5, which is much better.

It's a thumbs down from me.

I was toying with the idea of trying this at the weekend as I used to use AVG. However after some of the recent commenets I think I'll stick with AntiVir and my usual Anti Spyware programs.

Yep, me too. Sounds horrific. Shame as AVG have been good at providing free easy to use software for a while. Lets hope it's just teething problems that can be tweaked with updates.

If Vn 8 Free is a cut down Vn of the commercial package, how bloated is the commercial package then?

I agree that the Link scanner slows down my machine to the point of freezing so what 's the best way of going back to version 7.5 which worked perfectly for me?
Is it a case of just downloading the old version again or would a system restore work.
    Got Windows XP.

Well I thought Id give AVG 8 a quick try to see how it comapred to my current AV which is Eset Smart Security(NOD32) and also compare it to AVG 7.5

Anyway the AVG scan found nothing on my system and also completed full system scan in around 21mins which is on par with my Eset Scanner. This is a huge improvement over AVG 7.5 which used to take around 40mins.

I like the interface alot more in AVG8, doesnt look so dated compared to 7.5

Bootup perfromance on average, of my computer with AVG8 is around 1min16secs, with AVG7.5 it was 1min13secs.

Eset Smart Security beats this hands down with bootup in around 49-50secs.

Link scanner does seems to slow browser performance down slightly and it uses higher amount of resources than AVG7.5 or Eset.

Overall its seems OK and I liked the speeded up scan times, only time will tell how good at detecting stuff it is. I'll stick to my current AV though.:D
  • Did my scan tonight - it took 3 hrs 35 mins and 1.2m objects were scanned!!
