Hello Mandles

Don't panic! I'm sure that the experts in the 'Old Style' board will come to the rescue, so I'll move your thread across for you.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

• If your son is at a secondary school with a reasonable chemistry department, they should have got it out for you in a few minutes. they can use various organic solvents to loosen the gum. My old schools lab techs were brilliant at this, but unfortunately idk what they use. You could try asking your son to ask them.

You could try rubbing the gum with a plastic bag filled with ice until the gum is frozen and then chip away with a spoon.

Chewing gum on clothes is an occupational hazard of teaching . . . .
Where now?

As far as I know there are 2 methods. The first is to cover area with brown paper(paper bag is fine) and then iron over it. The gum will adhere to the paper.

The second is to put them in the freezer and then chip the gum off with your fingers. HTH

I think the previous posters have covered it, but there's an older thread (held in the MEGA Index) in the link that may help too:-

- Chewing gum on jeans

• Hi, I won't allow gum into my house for just this reason! Try putting the trousers in the freezer overnight - the school probably didn't have the opportunity to leave them for long enough. The gum should break off after that. Any residue try WD40 as suggested, or lighter fuel.

In my miserly moms book, she suggests
'slathering peanut butter all over it 'which would dissolve the gum.
