I remember reading not long ago that many independents are going under as there is hardly any profit margin. It also says that if you can use them and fill up and even just buy a Confectioner it may be enough to keep them going

Over recent years and I am sure its no different in my town as others, that we are loosing many forecourts and have to drive further out of town to get to one.

Unleaded and Diesel have gone up about 2p wholesale every other day this week.

It's only Scotland that will be affected by the strike up at their terminal.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT PETROL STATION!

I work at an independent service station and although our prices may be a bit higher than the supermarkets, we only make 3-4 pence on each litre. The supermarkets are selling theirs at a loss because they can afford to! They make their money from the shops and entice customers in with the cheap petrol. They do not make any money on their fuel at all.

Without independent stations are a valuable commodity in rural areas, but they are being forced out of business by the supermarkets.

Stop Mr Tesco ruining people's local businesses! Buy your fuel from a n independent service station.

i would support my local petrol station if the fuel wasnt taxed to death by our government.
when fuel was a bit cheaper, around the 70 p a litre mark i used an independant to fill up regularly, even although they were maybe a penny or 2 dearer.

but the difference is becoming larger and larger the local garage i did use is now £1.13 per litre of petrol compared to tesco or jet at 1.05

so why should i use the independant again?

get the tax down and i will consider it.

The refinery is not being shut down for a month. There is a 48 hour strike. Oil refineries cannot be shut down by the flick of a switch. This may be news to you but there is some dangerous stuff being used/produced at one of these places and they have to be shutdown PROPERLY. The same goes for starting it up again. It will take time. Factor in the loss of production for a period totally approximately 8 days and that takes a fair amount of time to catch up with, hence the statement that supplies could be disrupted for up to a month.

Edit: I also failed to mentionthe disruption to North Sea Oil and Gas as a lot of it is piped directly in at Grangemouth and that will obviously have to stop for the duration of the strike.

Exactly .... My other half works at a refinery and travels to one other refinery where he also works. He noticed on his way home yesterday that fuel is now upto £1.20.9 and reckons it will be up even more over the weekend!

I think it's amazing that someone just has to hint a shortages even in another far flung part of the kingdom and the sheep start flocking to the petrol stations panic buying - are they just idiots?

or just playing safe and with the price increase if you can afford to weather the price rises fair enough but why knock other people who maybe can not and be it in scotland or notany where the uk is down by at least 10% in refinery capacity and there is less to go round , personally I saved money by filling up and saving 3p a liter. a case in point is this

if grangemouth closes a 2nd site will close and that 2 out of the 10 refinery's in the uk shut and th, Its up to you if you trust the governments word the supplies will flow , personally im not so sure

Apparently Grangemouth refines 30% of total uk fuel, i think this is going to affect more than just Scotland and the north of England.
