The petrol companies are loving this - there is no shortage of stocks but we're throwing all our money at them! Brilliant plan by the 'mole' at Shell! ;)

They're laughing all the way to the bank!

Tesco are usually the cheapest in our area - around £1.05/£1.06 usually - this morning, went to get my weekly fill up and its £1.09 !!

They`ve obvisouly cottoned onto the fact that everyone will be panic buying...

I saw that yesterday Liz, Tesco was 109.9 where I am in the SE, it was 106.9 earlier in the week when I filled up my other car, strangely the Super Unleaded hasn't gone up in price

You can get all those features for under £500. Not as good fuel economy mind you, but not so much lower that it's going to turn that £500 to £5k, even if you do do 20k miles plus a year. Same with extra cost of insurance, couple of years and still won't make total cost £5k. My point is the £500 car will overall be cheaper, why spend £5k new (especially on a brand that's prone to depreciation) when £500, a little extra fuel, little extra insurance, little extra road tax will get you from A to B safely and reliably.

Servicing of many older £500 cars is cheaper than new cars and in some cases can be done yourself to make the ultimate savings.

Compare overall costs the £500 car versus the £5k new car (using a figure of depreciation as cost of car instead of purchase cost, as depreciation is the more important figure) and over 3 years the £500 car, even if it needs a new clutch and headgasket in that time, will be far lower.

To be honest I think it very much depends on what the £500 car is and what it's maintenance, fuel, insurance, tax, breakdown cover etc. costs are.
You must remember it is NOT a £5000 car, it is £5000 - what you sell it for one day + lost interest on £5000 or loan interest charges over the period you use the car. I do these calculations quite often, I have a spreadsheet.
Said Fiat Panda 1.1 retaining say 38% of it's £7000 list (but paying £6100 what car target price today) value and doing 50mpg 20,000 miles a year works out average per month over 36 months £428 a month.
A £500 car doing 32mpg assuming it even lasts 36 months and then gets scrapped is £444 a month. This is also assuming £325 a year (the price of a decent warranty which would not likely be open to you on a £500 car) is enough to cover non-routine servicing repairs and routine servicing tends to be more, not less than newer cars. Newer cars tend to have longer service intervals.
OK my figures are not perfect because I don't have quick access to exactly what a Fiat Panda 1.1 costs to service compared to "unknown 32mpg £500 car", but these figures are not way off and make the point that in the long run a newer car costing thousands can be cheaper than a £500 banger. It is wrong to assume a £500 car always has lower total cost of use.

Unleaded and Diesel have gone up about 2p wholesale every other day this week.

It's only Scotland that will be affected by the strike up at their terminal.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT PETROL STATION!

I work at an independent service station and although our prices may be a bit higher than the supermarkets, we only make 3-4 pence on each litre. The supermarkets are selling theirs at a loss because they can afford to! They make their money from the shops and entice customers in with the cheap petrol. They do not make any money on their fuel at all.

Without independent stations are a valuable commodity in rural areas, but they are being forced out of business by the supermarkets.

Stop Mr Tesco ruining people's local businesses! Buy your fuel from a n independent service station.

Petrol stations won't sell nearly as much Super Unleaded as normal unleaded and therefore will not have fuel deliveries as often. The wholesale price will have gone up, but the petrol stations will not change their Super Unleaded price until they get a new delivery in at the higher price (unless they are greedy!)
