Currys are doing tomtom 3000 for £249.99 the best value for money,
but if you use code 25OFF250_CANDG and saves another £25 when you spend £250
..... taking the price down to £225 delivered, absolute bargain0 -

Although there would appear to be a wide choice, if you want a dedicated in car, yet removeable to another car system that does not involve a PDA or phone, then you actually seem to have a fairly limited choice - Garmin or TomTom.
Having just spent a month thrashing both into the ground, in the medium (@£300) price range, I think a better idea than trying to buy the cheapest system is to try and find the best system at the cheapest price.
For what it's worth, in terms of durability, support, and reliability, I'd suggest either the TomTom 300 or TomTom1. These units are virtually functionally the same - the TomTom1 is thinner, and cheaper - but the 300 has better sound quality. They have virtually identical screens, with a choice of 3D or 2D display. They both offer a fool proof and intuitive touch screen for entering your destination. In addition, should you take a wrong turn, both will readjust and give you the next best route, rather than re-tracing your tracks.
TomTom1 has a much better chip than the 300....i couldnt use the 300 in my 307 without an external attenna (at an extra 50.00!!), but the 1 works a treat...its thinner and lighter was means its easier to carry in a coat pocket when not in the car....the speaker is more than loud enough, unless you are deaf....also the 1 doesnt come with a case or screen cloth whreas the 300 does (no big deal)
one thing though......pcworld are a joke.....they say you get a free case worth £50, which i bought direct from Tom Tom for £20!!!!Stevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -

If you can't get the synch to work i guess the pocket pc takes a memory card ? if so just put the mp3s onto the card via a card reader / writer.WHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..
Blimey what was that ?
That was your life mate
Oh I wasn’t quite ready can I have another go ?

just place these files on your tom tom in the correct folder and they will work fine.

Just to add to heathens comments about installing POIs for the TomToms. Your computer will not read them. However you just need to drop the ov2 and bmp files into your great britain maps folder - it is that simple! Your TomTom will read them from there. You can then set your alerts to ensure you are warned when approaching a camera. I recommend you visit pocket gps world for full instructions on downloading and installing the speed camera database.
POIs are available from the following websites for free:
www.tomtomfree.com
www.tomtompoi.net
www.poihandler.com
poiplace.oabsoftware.nl
www.dirksoft.co.uk
www.poiedit.com
Hope this is of help to all you TomTom owners.
