Confused?!
Version 8 has the updated streetmap software released this year. If you go to settings and then map and select mapsource in Garmin i3, it should come up with city navigator Europe NT+v8 (or v7 if it has that version). Presumably the software version 2.7 refers to the system software (or firmware) and you will find it when you select the about button in the settings screen. The firware need to be updated for both the versions from Garmin website.
You can also find the version number in the box next to the barcode.
As per GPS world, Garmin has promised that they will provide v8 to those with v7 but the disk has to be sent to Garmin for it to be updated (it has been expected for sometime but hasn't materialised yet). I want to avoid paying extra if Garmin decides to change their policy and start charging for this.

It tells you on the box, where the barcode is, either V7 or V8, like someone else has said, apparently Garmin are going to do a free upgrade for all those V7 users but you have to send your card to them so obviously its better to try and get V8 first time round.0 -

but now we are trying to subscribe on the tomtom site and try and get the free upgrade things.
What we are wondering is, I brought it for her so should it be subscribed in my name or hers? If anything went wrong it came out of my bank account so would the guarantee be in my name?
We dont yave a spare sd card so we cant get a back up yet, I'm rubbish at this stuff so I hope we do it right
it doesnt matter whose name you subscribe with as the guarantee is with the shop you bought it from not with tom tom and any problems should be delt with by them.
you dont need a spare sd card you just make a back up on your pc using the usb cable(you dont back it up to another sd card).if you dont download anything to the unit nothing on the original card will change so its very very unlikely you will spoil it.
dont bother with the tom tom plus services as its not worth it after the first free month as said earlier.
dont panic about updates or downloading points of interest yet just get used to using the unit first then your daughter will have more idea what shes doing.0 -
I've managed to get a backup onto the computer now, she had to go back to her halls at uni so I said I'd sort it for when she came back again as we didn't have time. The whole backup folder is 5.50MB is that right? The only thing she changed on the unit was setting her address. Once anything else is added I will do another backup is that advisable?
What happens if there was a problem then and the original sd card got damaged or corrupted would I just copy the back up folder onto and sd card and use that?
Oh I thought that tomtom would be the ones guaranteeing the unit even though I brought it from pc world, its just I know pc world arent the best company to deal with if anything goes wrong, just hope we dont get probs thats all. I just didnt want them making excuses about anything and anyway they havent even posted my reciept yet even though I've chased it up a few times.
I may aswell put her some poi's on anyway and speed camera things if possible as I know she wants them and anything else anyone thinks is worth putting on? Where is the best place to get them from so far I found
http://www.mytomtomgo.com/forum/index.php Apparently these will be charging £2 a month now soon
and

The poi are free from the above site and there speed camera database is the best that is available.Try this link for the speed cam files http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras.php they were updated in november. Do a google search for poi for all sorts of other stuff. Also lots more available on pocketgpsworld. REMEMBER that you are looking for ov2 type files for compatability with yout tomtom. do not pay for them as the freebies are better and more up to date.0 -
I have a Garmin i3 and when it froze I was going to remove the battery but I accidentally dislodged the Transflash memory card. I slipped it back in but now I get a message which reads:
"Please use the provided PC software to load maps, containing turn-by-turn route information"
I did not get a software CD with the unit. I tried various internet sites but cannot determine which file is required. Help, please!

Retreat, I'd try posting your problem here, they all seem really knowlegable and helpful.
