Version 8 has the updated streetmap software released this year. If you go to settings and then map and select mapsource in Garmin i3, it should come up with city navigator Europe NT+v8 (or v7 if it has that version). Presumably the software version 2.7 refers to the system software (or firmware) and you will find it when you select the about button in the settings screen. The firware need to be updated for both the versions from Garmin website.

You can also find the version number in the box next to the barcode.

As per GPS world, Garmin has promised that they will provide v8 to those with v7 but the disk has to be sent to Garmin for it to be updated (it has been expected for sometime but hasn't materialised yet). I want to avoid paying extra if Garmin decides to change their policy and start charging for this.

Thank you Siva... with luck mine is v8 but it is worth checking if you are buying a Garmin i3, as I agree with you over the sending out of a 'free' update disk when they charge silly money for the map software! My Garmin is working very well and I am over the moon with it as it has already saved me time and fuel on two long journeys. I downloaded the latest POI's and software version 2.7, which hopefully fixed some of the bugs mentioned in pervious reviews of the unit. How do you find yours?

Hi as far as I know the latest software update is 270. Has anyone had a further update then the 270?

The latest software update for the Garmin i3 is Ver. 2.70 as stated on the Garmin website:

I am pleased with it so far. I managed to return the v7 to Staples as well (didnt ask me too many questions as it was with all the packaging and only 2 days old). I haven't taken it on any long journey yet but would be trying over the next few days.

Whilst I appreciate that the main aim of this site is to save money, it's also true that not all SatNav systems are the same. Although there would appear to be a wide choice, if you want a dedicated in car, yet removeable to another car system that does not involve a PDA or phone, then you actually seem to have a fairly limited choice - Garmin or TomTom.

Having just spent a month thrashing both into the ground, in the medium (@£300) price range, I think a better idea than trying to buy the cheapest system is to try and find the best system at the cheapest price.

For what it's worth, in terms of durability, support, and reliability, I'd suggest either the TomTom 300 or TomTom1. These units are virtually functionally the same - the TomTom1 is thinner, and cheaper - but the 300 has better sound quality. They have virtually identical screens, with a choice of 3D or 2D display. They both offer a fool proof and intuitive touch screen for entering your destination. In addition, should you take a wrong turn, both will readjust and give you the next best route, rather than re-tracing your tracks.
  • I agree with nemo183 - cheapest is not always the most suitable for you. It is worth doing some investigation yourself before jumping into buying one. My criteria for choosing a satnav is that it should be intuitive and easy to use, can re-direct you even if you make a wrong turning, lists points of interests such as hospitals (my wife will really need this since she's a clinical advisor) and that it is robust and reliable. You can find more online reviews at https://www.lordpercy.com or http://fifthgear.five.tv/jsp/5gmain.jsp?lnk=401&featureid=185&show=s8e10&section=Consumer . Having played aroudn with it in a high street store, I chose the Tom Tom One in the end.

Excuse me if this has already been answered but this thread is now 43 pages!

I have noticed that a lot of you are buying the Garmin i3 which appears to be supplied with CITY SELECT V7/V8.

I currently have a Vista C and the city select maps cost around £100 and is supplied with 2 activation vouchers.

Can anyone tell me if you get the maps on a CD and are there any activation vouchers supplied, if so how many.

This would be good as it means I could get the I3 for my wife and get the maps onto my GPS.

    Cheers

Garmin i3 maps come on a Transflash card, they can't be copied.

I just found the version is 5.410 is that ok or do I have to update anything?
I updated mine LadyK but it makes no noticable difrence but it does use more memory.

As for your other question regarding POI you allready have pre-installed quite a few points of intrest on the TT1. Have a look on the unit under poi management. The best place to read up on any of the sat navs is on the gps forum (The site where you got speed cam files) it also tells you how to change your warning sounds from bleeps and things to thins like "Warning Gatso Ahead". Have a look around the gps forum and you will find everything that you need and more.

Thanx very much I will get there slowly. I'm going to get a bigger card and a cig lighter adapter converter for charging indoors if needed as they are cheap and usefull for other things. Then I'll update to latest version, then get the speed camera data and add on some pois and look at the rest gradually for changing beeps ect but thanx for that advise I think it sounds better to have that than beeps.

I'm just trying to figure out which card as I know some dont suit it and if its better to get high speed or standard but I'm going to check on this site too http://www.mytomtomgo.com/ seems a lot going off there aswell
    Thanx
