I am pleased with it so far. I managed to return the v7 to Staples as well (didnt ask me too many questions as it was with all the packaging and only 2 days old). I haven't taken it on any long journey yet but would be trying over the next few days.

Whilst I appreciate that the main aim of this site is to save money, it's also true that not all SatNav systems are the same. Although there would appear to be a wide choice, if you want a dedicated in car, yet removeable to another car system that does not involve a PDA or phone, then you actually seem to have a fairly limited choice - Garmin or TomTom.
Having just spent a month thrashing both into the ground, in the medium (@£300) price range, I think a better idea than trying to buy the cheapest system is to try and find the best system at the cheapest price.
For what it's worth, in terms of durability, support, and reliability, I'd suggest either the TomTom 300 or TomTom1. These units are virtually functionally the same - the TomTom1 is thinner, and cheaper - but the 300 has better sound quality. They have virtually identical screens, with a choice of 3D or 2D display. They both offer a fool proof and intuitive touch screen for entering your destination. In addition, should you take a wrong turn, both will readjust and give you the next best route, rather than re-tracing your tracks.0 -
I agree with nemo183 - cheapest is not always the most suitable for you. It is worth doing some investigation yourself before jumping into buying one. My criteria for choosing a satnav is that it should be intuitive and easy to use, can re-direct you even if you make a wrong turning, lists points of interests such as hospitals (my wife will really need this since she's a clinical advisor) and that it is robust and reliable. You can find more online reviews at https://www.lordpercy.com or http://fifthgear.five.tv/jsp/5gmain.jsp?lnk=401&featureid=185&show=s8e10§ion=Consumer . Having played aroudn with it in a high street store, I chose the Tom Tom One in the end.0

Excuse me if this has already been answered but this thread is now 43 pages!
I have noticed that a lot of you are buying the Garmin i3 which appears to be supplied with CITY SELECT V7/V8.
I currently have a Vista C and the city select maps cost around £100 and is supplied with 2 activation vouchers.
Can anyone tell me if you get the maps on a CD and are there any activation vouchers supplied, if so how many.
This would be good as it means I could get the I3 for my wife and get the maps onto my GPS.
Cheers

Garmin i3 maps come on a Transflash card, they can't be copied.0

I updated mine LadyK but it makes no noticable difrence but it does use more memory.Lady_K wrote:I just found the version is 5.410 is that ok or do I have to update anything?
As for your other question regarding POI you allready have pre-installed quite a few points of intrest on the TT1. Have a look on the unit under poi management. The best place to read up on any of the sat navs is on the gps forum (The site where you got speed cam files) it also tells you how to change your warning sounds from bleeps and things to thins like "Warning Gatso Ahead". Have a look around the gps forum and you will find everything that you need and more.0 -
Thanx very much I will get there slowly. I'm going to get a bigger card and a cig lighter adapter converter for charging indoors if needed as they are cheap and usefull for other things. Then I'll update to latest version, then get the speed camera data and add on some pois and look at the rest gradually for changing beeps ect but thanx for that advise I think it sounds better to have that than beeps.
I'm just trying to figure out which card as I know some dont suit it and if its better to get high speed or standard but I'm going to check on this site too http://www.mytomtomgo.com/ seems a lot going off there aswellThanx

I've just bought a Garmin i3 from the Somerfield in Yeovil for £150 on their 'Final reductions' type shelf. They had quite a few of them left. They also had a Medion PDA unit for £180. Both seemed pretty good but as my PDA phone is better spec then the Medion (less GPS) and the Garmin seems to be quite a nice little unit.
Since I bought the thing, I've already updated the software to 2.70 and installed the speed camera database. Lots of driving ahead of us tomorrow to try it out...

Afternoon all
Yesterday I bought the TomTom 300 sat nav. After reading about it and following the posts on here for quite a while, this one seemed to be right for me. BUT I shopped around for a good price and eventually got it for £249.99 from Curry's. (I thought this was a good price.)
We went to the Link and on their website it was £279,99 but in store it was £10.00 dearer, they said they would price match it with their online price but couldn't match the price of Comet online which was £249.99. So I said forget it, we then went to Comet and told the assistant the same story and asked if they would match their own online price but after checking for about 3 seconds she re appeared with a definite NO, so again I said forget it.
So we then went to try Curry's and by this time I wasn't very hopeful, however, we asked an assistant and he went and checked their price online and came back and said YES!!! So I was quite pleased with myself for shopping around and asking for a price match. It just goes to show what you can get if you ask!!
May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy new year and we all have good health and continue to make great savings and grab some fab bargains.if i had known then what i know now0
