    Hi

My boyfriend bought his Garmin from PC World and also had no CD. The usb cable is for connecting to your pc to get software updates on your GPS. If you look at post 131 on this thread it gives you the link for the latest software update. Hope that helps :D

Has anyone installed the firmware update on their Garmin I3 yet and if so, does it prevent all the crashes that people were getting?

All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.
  • i bought my i3 from maplins, it also arrived without the cd so i rang maplins who told me garmins had cocked up and not put the cd in all the boxes so u had to download the software from their website

  • by the way the garmin i3 for £199 is a great buy, it works brilliant, took about 25 minutes to pick up a satellite signal at first but after that it was fine

  • A bit worries about this...Buy something new and the next day people are telling me it need updating...
I can see me plugging it into my Confuzer ad wiping everything off the Garmin

AFAIK, you can download the poi database from http://www.pocketgps.co.uk and upload it the i3

I'm basing this knowledge on the fact that there is a the following on the garmin website for the i3:

    StreetPilot i3 Updates & Downloads

    * Additional Software
o POI Loader Ver. 2.0 as of July 29, 2005 Download

Mine should be here tommorow so I'll try and take a proper look over the w/e.

I can confirm that it works with the speedcamera database. I've just installed it on mine, which I bought today. It shows up the gatsos, mobiles, red lights, etc, as well as the european ones that apply. In this case, the Garmin comes with very basic maps of Northern France, Holland and Belgium. I would strongly advise you update the garmin first.

Instructions on how to get speed cameras onto your Garmin can be found here (penultimate post):

  • A couple of alternatives:

I found a Cable and Wireless PDA/GPS CWSN-1000 unit for £229.99 that can be used in and out of the car on Amazon - see here.

I also found a new PDA/GPS system, the Navman PiN 570 for £249.99 at Comet here. For an extra £5.85 (i.e. £255.84 total) you can get it with 3 months' interest free credit here. Mind you, ordering from Comet via mycashback (see my post on the referrers' board) would get you 1.5% cashback (£3.75) - buy at the right time with a credit card and you'd get about two month's interest free.

If anyone can comment on how good they think these two are, I'd be grateful. I'm getting a techno-urge to get a SatNav system, and while the Garmin i3 looks to be the cheapest, I'm thinking that an extra £32 for an Acer N35 PDA/GPS combo or a Navman PiN 570 for £250 would be money better spent. I'm also considering getting a new mobile, so could combine my GPS with that... but one question - what charges do you pay for accessing GPS via a phone? Do you pay the GPRS 'per megabyte' charge, or something else?

I'd like to be able to use my GPS unit out of the car, be able to add speed camera details on to it and get free map software updates if this combination is possible! Any ideas?

    Hmmm, decisions, decisions!
  • Have downloaded updates to my computer and they are but a click away on myDesktop but in the instructions it then says in line 10. Connect to computer etc. OK
Place GPS in Simulator mode (Cannot find that anywhere including manual)
Verify Interface Mode is set to Garmen etc etc or Data Transfer mode (Aint got that either)
