Vodafone will give you the unlock code for FREE if you have a vodafone branded phone.

other than the exceptions already mentioned, there is another large group of Vodafone phones not covered by the free unlock, which is all Pay as you go phones less than 12 months old, Vodafone still charge £20 to supply an unlocking code for these.

  • I found them to be most misleading.

I thought they were offering to provide an unlock code for 2.99 great! Payapl added some tax - annoying but ok. Then all i get is an email with info i could get from this site!!

I sent an email to complain they said they will refund but ill wait and see!!

    Moan over!

OK, I'll kick off the discussion as there's something I've been wondering about for a while and this seems like a good opportunity to ask the question.

    In Martin's article he states:

Now I recall someone from Vodafone posting on the forum and stating that PAYG customers can get an unlock code for free provided they've OWNED a particular handset for 12 months - ie it doesn't matter if you've been with the network for many years, if you've only owned your current handset for a few months, you can't get it unlocked for free.

Assuming that the 12 month rule DOES apply to handset ownership (and not how long you've been with the network), how do they verify how long you've owned the handset? - do you have to send them proof of purchase, or do they just check the handset's IMEI number against your mobile number to see how long it's been used with that number (in which case they could only prove how long you've USED the hanset - this may not necessarily be how long you've OWNED it if you had the handset for a while without using it, or possibly used it with another number).

Is anyone able to confirm therefore EXACTLY how the "12 month rule" is applied for unlocking Vodafone PAYG handsets, and whether there is any information about this on the Vodafone website?

ray I tried one of these unlocking firms they told me the phone was on the list and they caould unlock it, after taking my money they told me that the phone was not on there list but I could get the kit from vodafone for £3400+
what a take on I have asked for my money back lets see if I do

Does anyone know if u can unlock a three mobile???????????? Ive had my phone now for 18 months.

Have a look here http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12167, moderator captjimjam has confirmed it worked with his 3 Phone. It's only gonna cost you £4 ,so it doesn't really matter either way!

You can also get them unlocked in the Market though too, but chip from Deal Extreme will be cheaper and you can use it in other phones.

    Good Luck!
  • Just come off the phone to Virgin, they will unlock your phone for £15 and post the unlock code through the post within 7 working days. They just need your mobile number and IMEI. They have said in a minority of cases the phone has to be sent off to be unlocked, which could take up to a month!

I've had a look at some of the unlocking websites around and all of the supposedly legit ones I tried stated they couldn't unlock my phone (Sony Ericsson K510i).

I also had a very good look around for suitable software to do it via a cable, but due to a more recent firmware revision on the phone, there was no "safe" method available. As I didn't want to toast my phone, I've spent £15 with Virgin.

There's a chap on ebay who can do it via a cable if you send the phone to him, it worked out about the same as using my network provider, once you added up postage etc. He had excellent feedback, but I thought I'd play it safe with my network provider.

Be careful when posting your IMEI on this thread, people can potentially use it to clone the identity of your phone and I have heard horror stories of phones being blacklisted by an operator via a malicious third party, as this is the code they need to physically disable/destroy your phone (networks use it if your phone is declared stolen).
