bought one from o2 store today, no contracts, nothing to sign - paid by card and left.

iirc the only place where you have to sign an agreement is CPW, best to avoid just in case and just buy from an o2 store, there are plenty to go around. I would also recommend using a rarely used card, paying off the balance and canceling the card if u are at all worried about comebacks (i am not bothering as people have been doing this for months with no problems), hope that helps

i hate to wee on your parade, but my cousin (who has the iphone) says you buy it in store, then you have to activate it by choosing your tariff through itunes at home.

I think you were lucky, the website says price is for 18 month contract. Or maybe you got it as an upgrade?

There is a loophole to activate & unlock the phone without entering the contract. Allegedly.

No luck involved, very easy to do. You buy the phone itself (£169 as of today for 8Gb), O2 and CPW expect to to go home and choose your tariff through itunes. When you get home download ziphone or iliberty+ (google or youtube for walkthroughs). Unlock and activate the phone and its a SIM free iphone.

The only risk is at a later date O2 blocking the IMEI rendering your phone useless. If they did this they would have to block literally thousands of handsets dating back to when the first came out! Also if it were to be blocked it would still work as an ipod touch (which is more expensive atm). This is such a tiny risk as it would be a PR disaster and would almost certainly impact on their exclusivity deal with apple, i only mention it so you have all the facts.

People have been unlocking them via this method since the first went on sale, it is only now it's so affordable. I have not signed a thing (from o2 store), so legally I am not bound by any preexisting agreement.

This is a great deal get it soon before they all run out! (remember to buy from o2 store if you can otherwise cpw 2nd choice)

forgot to add, many people on hudk who are much bolder than I actually asked staff if they could unlock it at home and get out of the contract, answer was yes many times and one guy (staff) even said that is what he had done.

If you are a bit nervous about it just say you are buying it as a birthday present and you don't know which tariff the giftee would want. I went in, asked for it and even before I could say anything she was telling me that I would have to sort the tariff through itunes myself.
  • Does this not impact the warranty of the phone?

I am seriously considering getting one but am prone to dropping phones

I don't think any 'warranty' will cover you dropping your phones. The procedure does render the warranty invalid.

Now, yesterday a BG asked people to stop posting this kind of stuff because it encourages bypassing the contract which may have legal implications. I will again be accused of being an off-duty traffic warden for doing this, but just pointing this fact out.
The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster! :)

That's fair enough, I don't wanna get the site in trouble. All i will say is nothing was said about me being obliged to sign upto o2, she simply said that the phone is activated through itunes...
