Thanks for that, i will give them a ring today to see if they have anything for saturday work.
  • The other thing she could try which is what i did was to work on the 'bank' as a nursing auxiliary at the local hospital, I had to do one shift a month and it fitted in with other commitments too, also when I needed more work such as in the holidays, I was able to easily get more shifts.

Ripata, I think your daughter should make all the calls herself, just do the reseach for her. Is there a major shopping centre - they often have a website that lists jobs?
My daughter got the Yellow Pages and rang lots of Nursing Homes at 16 and became a Kitchen Assistant and then a Care Assistant. She would pop into small shops and ask if there was work - her friend got a job in a bookshop that way. Mine got a job in a local shop too.
She could set herself the target of ringing all the restaurants and cafes in your area until she gets an interview.
I really wouldn't employ anyone whose Mum rang for her though.

As a student myself I found that a lot of companies simply don't like to employ students...mostly because of the stereoptypical student image and the fact that they tend to leave companies without staff during the holidays. If your daughter would be able to work more during the holidays e.g. summer and christmas then make sure she makes companies aware of this in her cover letter as it would be a major advantage.

As for potential employers I would say try looking on the JobCentre Plus website and also in the obvious places such as shop windows etc. I got my first student job through the JobCentre Plus site and my second job (which I am currently still in) I got as a friend had previously worked for the company....so asking friends could also be a solution.

If she's really struggling to find part time work perhaps working full time over the summer and saving what she earns to get her through during term time would be another solution.

    Just a few ideas!

Thanks for your ideas, the reason iam ringing to make enquiries for her is because as ive stated before she is at colledge during the week and evenings she trains so apart from a saturday she hasnt time to do so ,iam just helping her out as ive said before its what any good mum would do.
  • Seeing as she is talented at sports - I would suggest that she calls the local leisure centres, sports shops etc. They would be keen to support a local talent (its good for their image)

My children went to a Sports Club at Cannons that was staffed by students.

Hey thanks for that idea, will get her to call saturday as you say she has lots of sporting experience and she is doing pe Alevel too, will let you know how she gets on.
  • The best place to start is at the Uni. They will have some sort of thing set up which will help students find odd jobs here and there, this could be anything from catering or going to answer some questions for businesses. It is quite flexible in that you usually have a choice on which jobs you want to do, although don't be too picky otherwise they probably won't bother contacting you, instead contacting the less fussy people.

As for other jobs, don't be too fussy either. Some people frown at the idea of working at a supermarket, but it could be worse, you could be working in fast food. Supermarkets usually have lots of vacancies come up, they are open all hours so it is usually quite flexible and most offer student jobs where you only work in the term-time or in the holidays. Just go around absolutely everywhere one weekend, shops, bars, cafes asking for application forms, print off 100s of CVs and be persistent. When I moved away I literally sent out about 50 CVs, only got 2 replies. One from Tesco saying I wasn't successful and another from Asda offering me an interview. That part-time income will come in extremely useful and if possible try and get some more full-time type work in the summer holidays, it is great for getting you out of that overdraft and if you can get the right work in what your daughter is studying then she can build up some invaluable experience which will pay off dividends when she graduates. Good luck!

Does the college or students Union have a sport service? Our Uni employs recreation assistants and class instructors on a casual basis and most of those are students. Plus depending on what she does the rates could be much better than a shop... (Rec asst stuff is comparable - perhaps slightly higher - than shops but skilled class instructor work is nicely paid- approx £15-20/hr!).
