  • I got a gorgeous bunch of multi coloured roses today from my OH as it is our anniversary on Sunday, they were delivered whilst I was at work. I have read all the tips and at the moment that are chopped and standing in a vase of boiling water. Should I keep swapping the water once a day for fresh boiling water or is once ok? I have flower food with them but wasn't sure if I should use it or not?
  • I was very lucky on Valentines day, because I got too dozen red roses on but they're beginning to droop. Do any old stylers have ideas of how to make them stay healthy looking for longer.
  • Fill a sink with water and cut the stems under the water. Then crush the ends also under the water - you may see bubbles . Transfer them to a vase full of water immediately. Some people say put some lemonade in the water as food.

Hi, you should change the water daily, and cut the stems down at a slant..
an asprin in the water I believe is really good too..

Take one of them and press it in a book.. that way when the rest die you will still have one to keep..
or tie them all with string, and hang them in a cool dry place, upside down, to dry.. a garage is good
  • Give them new water and re-cut and bash their stems. Bashed stems are meant to improve uptake. My grandmother says give them an Aspirin (?for minerals) as food as well!

Now I've written that down, it sounds highly unlikely! Can you tell I'm not a gardener?
  • I crossed with you Mandi!

Never doubted my grandmother's advice about the Aspirin!

Changing the water daily, and cutting the stems at a slant are good ideas, ive never heard of an asprin, but i have put a spoonfull of sugar in the water of my fresh flowers, and that seems to help!!!!
  • put them in boiling water , you will soon see them perk up , it worked with mine

I remember my mum telling me (not that I get roses very often LOL) that you should plunge them into boiling water before transferring to a vase of cold water - cut them about 2cm from the bottom at a slant. I've heard of lemonade in place of water and I have also added sugar to water. I have also heard of putting a pin in just underneath the flower itself - dunno why though - I think you can do this with tulips too?
I'd be inclinded to take them back to where they were purchased, most flowers now come with a 7day guarantee (sp?) so its disappointing that they are drooping already.

Edit to add: Lucky you in the first place getting roses! :heartpuls :heartpuls
