I seem to remember that aspirin in the water helps or a copper coin but do not know why.
I've heard of the aspirin one...and lemonde...and some Guinness, not together though.
  • well, an update...it's been around 2 1/2 hours since I dipped them in the boiling water and they don't look much better (maybe it was too late after all) but an hour ago I decided that I would do the tulip trick on half of them so I would know if it made a difference...errr, not yet....

I have to say that my dear hubby isn't the most observant of people (I left the house for 2 hours once and he didn't realise I'd gone until he had to make his own cup of tea) so if they don't recover soon I'll get some more asparagus fern from the garden to obsure them a little more.

My OH bought me some lillies a couple of weeks ago and they smelt really strong so he kept moving them off the table and into a corner out of his way and so the whole house didn't smell!

Because I have put my foot in it before I was very carful just to come in look at the flowers and say to OH, "they do look lovely thank you so much for buying them"! Hoping that I might get some more flowers before Valentines!

Otherwise, I have heard, fizzy water is supposed to help and also sugar in the water, though I guess that would do the same as lemonade...

Thanks for the boiling water tip, will be using that next time I get roses!
oooh look only about 220 posts and I got round to doing my Avatar already!!

For roses they should be dunked in boiling water and left, not dipped and yes my Mum always swore by using lemonade instead of water for flowers.

Was given a single red rose on Valentines Day once and the rose came home looking as drunk and limp as I was. Boiled up the kettle and popped it in the spout and went to bed....the rose looked considerably better than I did in the morning icon7.gif

remember to turn them in to pot pourri when they are past it. Cut the heads off - put on a sunny windowsill for a few days then when they are dried out put them into a little dish. So you have your roses forever. I still have the roses from my last bunch from my OH from my son's birth 21 years ago.

I only get bunches of flowers when I produce . 3 sons so 3 bunches of flowers. We have a huge garden so if i hinted I wanted some flowers he would just say Pick Your Own. i have daliahs the size of dinner plates in the front garden and loads of sweetpeas so I can't complain.
  • well, the good news is that the flowers although not ramrod straight are largely upright so it looks like I can get a couple more days out of them...thanks to everyone!
  • There has been another little bunch of roses from Mr Tycoon (something to do with there being lots of football on the TV at the moment). I cut the stems and went straight for the boiling water this time and 2 days on they are perfect, totally upright and opening up nicely (the others wilted before opening).

A lesson learned here I think!
  • Hey, if someone wants to buy me a bunch of roses then I don't mind experimenting to see what method makes them last longer :j :D
