BroadBand Speed?

  • Hi
I am in a similar situation. I am a BT customer and get a consistent 2meg on an upto 8meg contract. I live about 4kfrom the exchange.

Yesterday I got a telesales call from TalkTalk. The operator said I could get broadband for life and 8meg speeds. I said I did not think that was possible and they could not improve on BT. She said they have installed new TalkTalk equipment at my exchange. I again said I don't think so. She said she would do a line check whilst we were on the phone and continued with her sales patter about all the extra services I would get. I let her continue and then guess what? She could not get her system to give my super new broadband speed!! I said goodbye.

Today I went to the TalkTalk website and got the following results.
Calling plan will activate on 13 May 08
Line rental on 13 May 08
Your broadband will activate on 13 May 08 giving you a speed of 2.0 Mbps.

Well there you go. Can you really get a better download speed by changing providor?

Generally no (unless you move to a ADSL2+ Connection (Upto 24Mbps Service))

The speed of your connection is bound by the charateristics of your line.
I would probably guess you were provisioned on a 2Mb Fixed rate service because of how far you are from the exchange.

    You have 2 choices now.

    1. You can either call TalkTalk and get them to cancel the migration (at which you will prob be fobbed off that they cant do it). You also most likely loose your Broadband until you speak to your old provider and get it switched back on.

    2. You let it go ahead then Migrate back once you have been switched over stating the reason you are migrating is because you never actually authorised the migration.
You shouldn't have any downtime with this method

The 2nd option is obviously the way I would advise.

    In short YES.

The speed of your connection is bound by the characteristics of your line and the technology used by the ISP to provide your broadband.

Stay with your present provider or see if any better providers are available on your exchange here e.g. providers using ADSL2+ technology like O2, Sky etc. If you enter your line stat details here you will get an indication of what speed you can expect.

loulou, for your stats, and distance from the exchange, the mid @ £5 is a good choice, and your speed test result was ok for the stats, what was the question again? lost track of this thread..
