Thanks Tony. I'll give them a ring. How do I get stats then on this modem ?

The point of this thread was to give me any advice upfront before I talk to AOL as you know what their help staff can be like.

Look on there for your modem & post up the stats that it gives

Guess what - my modem not on list.

Anyway, I spoke to AOL online help to ask if fixed at 512. They did not answer that question but said 'from what i have just checked there could be a fault on the line causing the slowness, we may need to have it investigated. Would it be possible to call in and speak to technical support so we can get a line test done?'

So I did that and they asked me to record speed 4 times a day over next 2 days, even though I had already stated I averaged 483Kbps and never higher than 505Kbps. So I'll record speeds and ring again in few days.

    Hi
I am currently with AOL for broadband and get speed of 512KBPS as I am on the edge of the broadband area due to distance from the exchange. I am thinking about moving to talktalk for the free broadband service and see that they are installing their equipment in the local exchange, on entering my details the talktalk site says this...

Your broadband will activate: 14 May 08 giving you a speed of up to 512 Kbps
Your network switchover will occur by:10 June 08 giving you a speed of up to 2.0 Mbps

Does anyone know if the speed can increase with talktalks equipment on my exchange or is the 2.0Mbps one of these infamous "upto" things...presumably they know how far away my home is from the exchange and cant say speed will improve to upto 2.0 if the max that I can get is 512Kbps or can they?? anyone got any thoughts
    thanks
    Jim

despite your bad attitude, from the site previously mentioned http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm#anchor8, do either of the tricks for the Voyager 100 or 105 work on your modem to get the extra stats. Also what site are you using for the speedtest (speedtest.net or the BT one? a couple can be fairly unreliable despite you getting what seems to be constant results). There are a few other tests you can run like th equiet line test to see if its a noisy phone line casuing it, if thats the problem then changing ISP may not help as it's the physical line. When you say you used the test socket at one point, do you normally just connect direct to the main point or an extension on that too?

Apologies If you think I had/have a bad attitude. I did worry it came across as like that which is why I put in bit about appreciating your help.

I guess I got frustrated about confusion with modem/router and adsl2 comment. That is the problem with texts/emails/forums etc, people read things a different way. Probably would have helped if Ihad put more info in 1st message. You can put it down to PMT if you like !

Anyway thanks for continuing. I could not find the system tray icon you mentioned, get page not found for192.168.1.1 but did put in 192.168.1.0 and it brought up AOL test page with following info :-

    Unit Serial Number 0016E373DA05
    Firmware Version V1.2
    Modem Uptime 00d:01h:06m:58s
    LAN Connection 100Mbps Full
    Network Name
    BRAS Name
    Modem Sync Time 00d:00h:52m:47s
DSL Line Speed (Kbps) up 288 down 576

Line Attenuation (dB) up 31.5 down 62.0

SN Margin (dB) up 24.0 down 20.4

Output Power (dBm) up 11.4 down 16.4

Lost Framing Local 0 Remote 0

    Signal Local 2 Remote 0

    Power Local 0 Remote 0

    Link Local 0 Remote 0

Errors FEC up 0 down 0

    CRC up 0 down 113

    HEC up 0 down 54

Total Error Seconds up 10 down 99

It runs AOL tests but closed it quickly as last time I ran it it failed to find DNS server and broke my connection. Hubby would not be too pleased as he will be wanting to check email in a few minutes.

I have four sockets in house. Master socket is downstairs. PC is upstairs connected to a bedroom socket. This would be my normal setup although have tested with socket behind master plate with no improvement.
I have phones and filters in 3 sockets. Nothing in 4th socket. Filters and modem as suplied by AOL.

I am using speedtest.net. I think have tried a few others in past - maybe marginally different but pretty consistent results. current test speedtest.net 486kbps http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk
    2 tests 498kbps and 503kbps

DSL Line Speed (Kbps) up 288 down 576 means you are on a fixed 512 kb package, fastest speed test you could ever get is 480 kbps.
Line Attenuation (dB) up 31.5 down 62.0 means you are on a very long line and if you were to try adsl max you "might" achieve an IP profile of 1.5Mbps.
Maybe worth trying to get those stats when connected to test socket behind master and see if down attenuation or snr margin changes significantly (you won't see any immediate change just by doing speed tests) which might affect potential speeds you could expect - http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx is a handy tool for an estimate.

Pity AOL never actually answered this question about fixed 512kb when I asked them yesterday. Annoying because I had 2 emails from them last year saying they were upgrading speed

I'll try those stats on master socket next week if I get nowhere with AOL support next couple of days.

No worries, apologies for being ratty too, at least we found the stats which was main thing. As others have said, the line length is your main issue, the better news is that the local wiring looks to be ok which should remove that from equation. The other thing is your SNR levels are quite high but this may be due to the length of line, would be interesting to keep monitoring and see if they drop at certain times of day, if they get close to 0 then your connection will drop, if they don't then on some ISPs and routers you can amend them manually , if you reduce the SNR then that will reduce teh attenuation potentially which may improve speed a bit. I.e. closer to exchange people run with SNR of 3 occasionally.
