FWIW the 50/1 and 20/1 contention has been dropped, BT insist there is essentially no contention on adslmax, though sky's llu may be different

Actually ADSL Max (the upto 8mb Rate Adaptive) is contended.
I beleive Sky's LLU is 35:1 however I could be wrong

The only service you get that is a 1:1 contention ratio is a leased line.

What the ISP's having going is a big scam that relies on people misunderstanding of ADSL technology.
The speed they advertise is the Sync Speed (The speed you connect to the exchange at). However your download speed (called Throughput Speed) is something completely different - It relies on where you are connecting to, the type of traffic, and contention.

The only guarentees you get for Throughput is 400kbps on a Sync Speed of 2128kbps (Basically you connect at 2Mb/sec or more and you WILL get 400kbps throughput, otherwise its a Low Threshold Breach at which you can raise a fault :D)

only just turned the pc on, will look for a link re contention, i may not have made the point s clear as i should, max is contended, but not in the 50-1 manner of the previous fixed products, and exchange level contention should not be an issue, link to follow when there's time

HA! that's told me, i cannot find anything official about contention ratios (exchange level), possibly because BT no longer publish the data, apparently due to them now considering it irrelevant. found a few newsnet/forum postings with the same belief as me, but i wouldn't accept them as evidence, so i wouldn't expect anyone else to.

Finding out the contention ratios you are on is like pulling Teeth....

Some lines I can find out the contention ratios but most I cant.
However if you are on IPStream or IPStream Max (BT's Backbone) a VERY good site to check for contention is PlusNet Exchange Checker.
Its kept update to date with the weekly updates from BT Wholesale.

I'll dig out the Link later from my backups :D (Remember Jesus Saves..... but geeks make backups!)

Yeah I wish...... Hell I have to wait to Q3 2010!!

Damn living in a small country town. (Scarily there was a Property Auction sign outside the exchange recently). Nearest exchange is 5 miles away so there would go my ADSL.

Which service are you signed up for?
    http://broadband.sky.com/
    Up to 2MB?
    Up to 8MB?
    or Up to 16MB?
I would guess you are on up to 8MB, but I suppose it is possible your on up to 2MB.
