BT website says max I can expect is 1mb.
I'm on AOL silver £9.99 and just tested speed and got 494Kbps, tested earlier and got 505Kbps. Don't think I often get much higher that that.
Have tested at master socket (taking main plate off and using the socket behind) - no improvement.
Before I talk to AOL is there anything else I can try to improve speed ?
Had problems with AOL a few weeks ago (like countless others) so looked around to change. Fancied O2 but they said I am too far from exchange, and not a lot of point changing to someone else more expensive if I can't get much of improvement on speed.

ignore your actual distance, what do your router stats say about your attenuation, SNR and any errors on the line currently, that will tell you much more about what your line will potentially give you0

I don't have a router, I have a BT voyager 190 ADSL modem.
Dialbb (network connection) says connected at 100Mbps under activity it says no errors.0 -
Th BT website says the 190 is a router? is it definitely a modem

Who said anything about BT website saying the 190 is a router ? I said I don't have a router, I have a modem. I don't know how to get stats you mention.
I quoted the Bt website as saying I can get a max of 1.0 Mbps. This is when I use their speedchecker with my phone number.
Can anyone answer original question - i.e realistically what max speed can I expect with this setup. Other then going to Virgin is there much point in switching to more expensive adsl provider.0 -

The Voyager 190 is an Ethernet modem supplied only to AOL.

So your low speed is likely to be due to your long line length or poor SNR stats. Have you tried entering 192.168.1.1 into your browser?

You have been told that the max estimated speed is up to 1.8Mb on ADSL2. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
without the stats (att and snr) nobody is going to be able to give you a better estimate that BT, though it'sfair to say bt's estimates are often a little conservativel Perhaps phone your isp and ask if you are on a fixed 512k product, and if you can be moved to adsl max without incurring charges or a new contract, can't do any harmUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

Thanks Tony. I'll give them a ring. How do I get stats then on this modem ?
The point of this thread was to give me any advice upfront before I talk to AOL as you know what their help staff can be like.0 -

IE - a long pause and then google search results page
Firefox - 'The connection has timed out,The server at 192.168.1.1 is taking too long to respond. * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy.' So I guess that's another page blocked by AOL.

That may be so but stats above also tell me max estimated speed on ADSL is 1.5Mb and I'm only getting a third of that, so not sure how relevant you quoting that is.
I do appreciate you taking time to read/answer but not really any wiser. Will try techhelp at AOL now - wish me luck.0
