Please how do I check my sky BB speed? Just connected to sky bb this morning. I did a test and got this 1488kbps download and upload speed is 287kbps. Don't understand what this means but I guess I am getting less than 2 mb. Thanks0

Any kind of internet connection can be speed tested here:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
Do not expect to get your full speed, no one does. 1.488Mbps out of a 2Mbps service is a good result. I get about 5.5Mbps out of my "up to 8Mbps" ADSL service.0 -
If your talking about ADSL and not Cable then the true speed test can be carried out from BT Speed Tester
Not on Sky LLU proviided ADSL!
Use one of the many on-line speed testers e.g. here:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
just used the tbb test, 2983kbs! speedtest.net gave me 6807kbs, a 25meg download from microsoft gave me 730-760kB/s throughput from my 7150, i;d expect the bt test to show similar.
moral of the story? don't trust speedtests, trust downloads from a decent site, try microsoft office compatability packUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Just did it and got this 16/04/08 22:09:00 Speed Down 2364.16 Kbps ( 2.3 Mbps ) Speed Up 322.50 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps ) Port 8095The exchange is 2.54 kilometers from my home. I think I can only get up to 1.5mb before. Anyway I have not noticed any big difference since swapping to sky. Son reckons, the speed seems faster. Thanks0

If you have only just started using the service, certainly for ADSL over a BT line, it takes several days for the system to adapt to the best possible speed for your line length / quality etc. So expect it to vary quite a bit early on. The speed you get will vary anyway as you are usually sharing the bandwidth with 50 (domestic ADSL services) or 20 (business ADSL services) other users. In a residential area you can expect it to be slower in the evenings.
There will be variations between different ISP's too.
Using a download as a method of speed testing is unreliable because the bottle neck to the bandwidth you get could be the internet connection from the server hosting the file your downloading from and not your connection.0 -
adrian, i agree to a point, but it is a real world test, rather than a contrived speedtest, microsoft probably have a fairly good connection, and a download from there always maxes out my connection, whatever that should be at the time.
FWIW the 50/1 and 20/1 contention has been dropped, BT insist there is essentially no contention on adslmax, though sky's llu may be differentUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

I'm not really sure about the difference between a real world download and a contrived test. A contrived test will still be transferring data over the connection, and data is data. Why should it make any difference?0
