130mph around the M25 at 3am on a Sunday morning is perfectly safe (been there, done it, I'm here aren't I?)...................25mph outside an urban school at 3.30pm is probably not.
But not because of vehicle speed, mind you............don't get me started on kids having to learn the Green Cross Code.
Jeez always wondered where Mr Perfect driver was ? yipeee, now I've found him, what a pillock chuckles  what gives you the right to endanger others travelling at a speed you havent a clue about, and you hanging on like the proverbial squidgy organic bit in a fast car. I take it the road was completely clear of other organic things ?0 -

it was a motorway, what was other "organic squidgy things" doing walking around it?
the motorways were designed to take fast moving traffic away from these things....work permit granted!0 -
Most people have that attitude and think they are capable of determining 'the condiitions' .. jeez, most people have such low self esteem that they even think they are good drivers simply because they can exceed a speed limit and make it home ... they often retain that belief until the day something extraordinary happens, the child runs out, an animal bolts from a field, the car in front or their own has a blow out, the car coming the other way also contained a low self esteem driver who held the belief they could handle it ... they then spend rest of their life in denial that it WAS their fault or asking themselves 'what if?' or even vegetating in a wheelchair reliving their glory days of speeding, blaming something else, while sucking their dinner through a straw and passing it out to a bag. Is it worth it?Pew_Pew_Pew_Lasers! wrote: »The only safe speed is one that is safe for the conditions. Thats it.
Numbers on sticks do not determine that speed.
Next time you are showing off to your mates, wife or children remember to pack a fish slice with you .. you might just need it to scrape them off the windscreen. I am amazed at how many parents seem to care so little about their children.
if you really want to have a good thrashing of speed then go to a race track .. it is a fun day out and you will learn that going fast isn't always about speed. All the pathetic amatuers that talk about doing the tonne or 120 or 130mph ... jeez a 15 year old out joy riding can do that up a motorway ... try doing 160+ on a track. You will learn that despite your ego telling you otherwise you are just an average driver with an average amount of control over the vehicle which is why we have speed limits ... to satisfy average drivers.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
Sensible speed limits ARE needed and SHOULD be adhered to.
Like Ivan pointed out there are just as many "boyracers" as there are "slow coaches", and they both need guidance as to where and when they need to be driving slower or more carefully.
Modern cars are very comfortable and it is easy to misjudge your velocity and either get caught or have an accident. No one wants children hurt, be it the motorists fault or the childs.
That said I dont think cameras on long straight fast roads are the way to make roads safer.
Outside schools, yes maybe.
Also.. if all car speedometers read high, then by definition they are NOT "calibrated". So how can you be prosecuted for speeding when you have no accurate indicator to guide you.?“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
If you're going to speed stick to the speed limit + 10% + 20

Surely it makes it doubly worse that you were doing an indicated speed so much above the speed limit to get caught speeding.
If anyone wants to drive above the speed limit there's some race tracks you could go on.0 -

as ever when you are in the wrong you only chose the bits that "support" your argument the post also refers to other countries . just so you are clear as far as im concerned if you are caught speeding you deserve the points/fine , i would go further and say if you are caught twice you have to retake the test anymore offences and the licence is revoked for 5 years .i have been driving for over 20 years and have a clean licence not because im lucky but because im not reckless and am intelligent enough to read the speed signs and control a car under the limit ! while im sure there will be many more comments this subject is done to death every day and is incredibly boring now . the only moneysaving aspect of this topic is the obvious one ! stay within the limit and you wont have a fine to pay! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I am not disputing the speeding. If you ARE speeding then yes you should pay the fine.
All I am saying is IF car speedometers are not accurate, then how can anyone be LEGALY prosecuted for driving at the wrong speed?
How can you possibly KNOW how fast you are traveling if the measuring equipment is faulty by design.“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
ChrissyG you are begining to sound like Connor..
How many miles a year do you drive??
I know Connor says he does lots as he is a HGV driver, but how many do YOU do?
I drove for almost 22 years before I got "caught" by a camera.
Then I got caught again by the same camera a week later before I had been informed about the 1st offence.
If you say have NEVER exceeded a speed limit in your life, then you are either a liar, an extremely slow driver,or you have amazing powers of concentration and observation.
YES some people do drive too fast, but not EVERYONE with points on their licence is as guilty as you are making out.
take a good look at yourself and honestly admit that you may just once or twice have made a tiny mistake and exceeded a limit just a bit, but luckily you for you no one was watching“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
Maybe I missed it reading through the thread but don't people think that many of the new speed limits are completely un-justified? How many roads are now 30, 40 or 50 mph for reasons of political correctness? Where I live many stretches that were once national limit are now reduced, signs everywhere but where is the mass carnage that must have happened to justify them?
Half a mile from were I live there is a new set of traffic lights at a difficult junction. They have installed the lights and got rid of the STOP line. A bad smash occured a couple of days ago, the worst at that junction anyone I've spoken to can remember, both cars written off. If the lights had been obeyed how could this happen?
Whats the immediate reaction to this, 2 officers stood at the junction with a hand held camera shooting fish in a barrel.
